Composed by Traditional Armenian. Arranged by Constance Shelengian. Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,Wedding,World. Score. 6 pages. Constance Shelengian #1074461. Published by Constance Shelengian (A0.1498151).

For Solo Piano with Guitar chord diagrams.

Traditional dances in ancient Armenia were essential to celebrations, holidays, rituals, social gatherings and more. This medley of Western Armenian music in 10/8 is drawn from the Anatolian song-dance tradition and perpetuated in America. In Sirahar Yem (“I'm In Love”), the Left Hand reinforces the stressed beats within the rhythmic pattern, emphasizing beats 1, 4, and 6.  Beats are grouped as 3 2 2 3. Initially, this may be a challenge to play but well worth the effort to expand one’s musicianship skills!

While harmony is sparingly interspersed in the inner parts, or created in intervals of 3rds and 6ths, traditionally, the ceremonial/wedding melodies Candle Dance and Hars Oo Pesa (“Bride and Groom”) are monophonic. Due to the mountainous terrain in historic Armenia and challenge of travel between villages, these two dances exist with different melodies, depending on the region. The dance steps also vary by village.

In contrast, the use of a sustained note (drone) in the bass clef alters the spirit in Hars Oo Pesa where the key also changes to D major. Whereas the piano has limitations in replicating microtones of folk wind instruments such as the zurna used in an authentic Armenian village wedding, the aim in this arrangement is rather to preserve the spirit of the melody and actively engage the amateur pianist.

Hinkala, or Hingala is in the key of D minor. In this arrangement, the simple unembellished melody is set in a gentle jazz waltz style where the L.H. provides the sense of movement and harmonic appeal. It is an unpretentious cross between Armenian folk and light swing. When sung in Armenian, the lyrics depict a downhearted shepherd on a mountain playing a love song as he is surrounded by vibrantly colored flowers.

A Medley in 3/4 meter (Hinkala/Hrant’s Lament) can be heard on the album, “Oud Vibrations: Songs of Armenian Heritage” featuring Rich Shelengian, oud, Constance Shelengian, piano. Select the YouTube link below to access the audio.

Composed by Armenian Folk. Arranged by Constance Shelengian. Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Score. 2 pages. Constance Shelengian #1003208. Published by Constance Shelengian (A0.1421877).

An Armenian song and dance in 5/4 meter, Gorani originated in Daron in western Armenia, now Anatolia. Ā The lyrics have been variously interpreted as a love song, or as sentiments for a disappointing harvest, or more profoundly, as a lament for a lost homeland or adored one.

Gorani is in the key of E minor. The haunting R.H. melody is often harmonized in thirds and sixths, but also serves as an accompaniment with an open octave when the L.H. is given the melody. The R.H. reinforces the quintuple meter with a beat grouping of 1-2 1-2-3. The melody is augmented at the end.

Constance Shelengian studied piano with Maro Ajemian. She has a Doctor of Musical Arts Degree and is a retired music educator.

Epitaphios
The idea to write a piece which would embed various eastern instrumental playing techniques into western aesthetic milieu was the main musical trigger for Epitaphios. There are some pre-existing musical materials involved in the creative process. First and the main reference comes from so-called Seikilos Epitaph - a Hellenistic ancient Greek song which is the oldest surviving example of a complete musical composition. It is notated on a tombstone, a stele dating back to around 1st century AD which was found in present western Turkey. Other 2 main references are nearly tonal neo-romantic sacred music and perhaps most interestingly microtonal Middle Eastern music ornaments peculiar to traditional bowed string instruments such as Kamancha. By correlation and superimposition of these 3 different styles the composer created a complex, multilayered somewhat eclectic atmosphere which may allusively reflect the composite approach to the problem of life and death from rational, emotional and spiritual perspectives.

The recording is a live performance by Movses Pogossian and Armen Derkevorkian, violins, Tien-Hsin Cindy Wu, viola, Vardan Gasparyan, cello at Zipper Hall, Los Angeles (2015).

Vahram Sarkissian (Sargsyan)

One of the most distinguished Armenian composers of his generation Vahram Sarkissian is best known for his choral and chamber works that have been widely performed throughout Europe, Asia and North America. His style represents a palette of multicultural creative initiatives influenced by numerous traditions and practices spanning from V century Armenian medieval chant to previously unreported endogenous vocal extended techniques.
