Organ - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.534661 Composed by Claude Debussy/Robert Orledge. 20th Century,Concert,Halloween. Score. 16 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #5739561. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.534661). Over the years 1908–16, Debussy had produced a viable scenario for Usher on his third attempt. But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself. In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

String Quartet String Quartet - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1402959 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 95 pages. Robert A. Howard #986178. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1402959). This Second String Quartet is in four movements, and runs to over 30 minutes long. The work uses the traditionally expected forms for each movement, as a framework or starting point for departure, but also uses a conceptual title for the work as a whole. In this case 'Locomotion', or the conveying of motion (especially with regards to train travel), was used as a compositional stimulus in creating extended pattern-based textures, as well as the development, or journey, of motifs and themes. Otherwise, there is no particular attempt to evoke the sound of particular modes of transportation, or certain landscapes or scenes. Such imagery is left at the discretion of the listener. Formally, the work begins with a loose sonata form first movement, based around E (modal minor). The second movement, on A, bears the hallmarks of a busy scherzo, while the sentimental slow movement in D minor that follows is based on ground basses, in a ternary form of two varied themes. The extended finale grows out of the previous movement, with a jig-like rondo theme on another ground bass. Contrasting episodes feature modulating material, as well as a secondary theme in C. The final section sees a cyclic return of the first movement's first theme, now at the finale's faster tempo, and in the closing key of G minor. The work as a whole sees much use of canonic, or heterophonic textures, within a broadly minimalist style.  Duration: 32 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

This piece is an arrangement of a short work for handbells (also available in a one hand piano version), originally written as a centenary tribute to the great American composer Aaron Copland (born 1900). The work makes a brief reference to Copland's famous 'Fanfare for the Common Man' before developing its own sense of line. Harmonies are created by sustaining melodic notes in the manner of bells. Instrumental Solo,Organ - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1399319 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Christian,Easter,Lent,Sacred. Individual part. 7 pages. Robert A. Howard #982587. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1399319). 'Postlude in Glory' was specifically written for John Hosking and the first Blackburn Cathedral Composition Competition in 2023. The brief was to compose a Postlude to be played at the end of the Easter Day service, and to use a well known Easter melody. The piece begins with an introduction based on piling fourths, around the opening three notes of the ensuing theme upon which the work is based: 'Melchoir Vulpius' (1609), otherwise known as the hymn tune 'The Strife is O'er'. There follows a set of variations on this theme; initially featuring an Alberti bass, then a variant with the melody in canon in the pedals, then followed by a tonic minor key version, and then a 'scherzando' variation using 5/8 metre in the subdominant. After a return of the introductory build-up, a final 'brillante' version of the theme is stated, complete with fanfares, followed by a victorious coda. The work is highly accessible and can be performed by higher-grade students and professional players.Duration: 5 minutes.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Piano Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998858 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Instructional,Religious. Score. 6 pages. Robert A. Howard #6235333. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998858). This is the extended piano version of an abridged work (The Lantern Tower (Chorales I)), by the same composer, also available via Sheet Music Plus. The title of the piece reflects its inspiration: the Lantern Tower of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (1966-67). The tower's sixteen sides contain panels of stained glass, designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. Their effect is to bathe the cathedral in radiant colour, with three plain panels projecting shafts of brilliant white light through the multi-coloured spectrum. The Lantern Tower (Chorales II) aims to illustrate the intermingling light patterns in a series of chorale-like variations, which, like the tower itself, eventually comes full circle. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for more advanced pianists, including students and professionals.Duration: 10 minutes 15 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

Piano Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1089752 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival,Instructional. Score. 21 pages. Robert A. Howard #693959. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.1089752). This is the complete set of Sketches I-VII, that each elaborate upon ideas previously left dormant in sketch form. The first piece has a slow introductory feel, with a rising added-note chord sequence alongside a descending bass line, in crescendo. The second piece is based on a 7-bar ground bass (rising a minor third each time), that features considerable textural variation on each cycle, and culminates in a 3-part canon. The third piece explores the whole range of the piano in varied statements of a 10-bar semiquaver toccata theme, featuring canons and a superimposed scotch-snap theme. The fourth piece is cumulative, in four sections, and gradually descends in pitch by alternating hands in a minimalist build up of motifs, each followed by a chordal refrain. The fifth piece gradually builds up a right hand melody over various syncopated harmonies and appoggiaturas, before inverting the role of the hands. The sixth piece is a simple cycle of ascending repetitions of a 10-bar added-note chord sequence, with octave bass line, that rise by a perfect fifth each time. The seventh piece is a varied repetition of the opening movement (thus framing the cycle), with the initial chord sequence now arpeggiated, and with a fuller texture. The cycle is highly accessible and is appropriate for most standards of pianist, including students and more advanced players. Individual pieces from this Sketch cycle are also available separately, via Sheet Music Plus. String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998853 Composed by Robert A. Howard. Contemporary,Standards. 2 pages. Robert A. Howard #6205913. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998853). 'Klee's Sketchbook' is based on the work of the Swiss-born artist Paul Klee. The piece is graphically notated throughout, referring explicitly to Klee's various notions of taking a 'line on a walk'. In this work, lines are presented in a variety of labelled forms and combinations, including the active, static (passive), angular and shadowing. The score indicates the basic outline of instrumental contours on staves, thus always implying certain pitches. However, many elements, such as dynamics and durations (and exact pitches), are left for the performer to determine. The work remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of string player, including students and professionals.Variable durationRegistered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk

French Horn Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998872 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Chamber,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. Individual part. 3 pages. Robert A. Howard #6348481. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998872). This poignant work for solo horn is based on the Dylan Thomas poem 'Elegy (for his father)'. The series of irregular isolated phrases in the principal outer sections were actually created by setting some of the text from the aforementioned poem, as the work was originally conceived as a vocal setting. The contrasting second section (later briefly alluded to before the final passage) is faster, in 7/8 metre, and is a series of permutations on a melody created by setting initial lines from Dylan Thomas's 'In My Craft or Sullen Art'. A central section features some military-like fanfare motifs and material from a projected setting of the Gloria. The piece is highly accessible and is appropriate for higher standard horn players, including students and the more advanced.Duration: 6 minutes 00 seconds.Registered with PRS (Performing Rights Society, UK).Composer's website: www.roberthowardmusic.co.uk
