The reason I chose the name Yesterday's Future is basically because I wanted to write a piece where it portrays moving on from something happening in you life. If I were to write it again, I would probably change up the melody a bit halfway through to make it more interesting, but nonetheless, I am pretty happy with it.As the theme continues throughout the whole the piece, changing very subtly, it resembles something you need to let go of. At the end of the piece with the held right hand and moving left hand, I wanted to make that part sound like it is moving on with the dynamics changing to resemble anger and relief. Published by Damien Gauci (A0.1408124). This piece was inspired by Chopin's pieces 'Nocturne in C# Minor' and Prelude Op. 28, No. 4. The solemn, singing melody in the right hand is meant to be played as marked, 'cantabile'. This, along with the left hand's slow moving arpeggios with some consonant and dissonant parts creates a reflective, peaceful mood.Whilst writing this piece I wanted to focus on writing a piece in binary form, as the second half of the piece shows. I still tried to keep the melodic melody in the right hand, but the left hand changes to a waltz-like accompaniment. If I were to write this piece again, I may have explored the first part for much longer and made a nice transition into the second part.As for now, this is my last piece which I composed at an earlier time. I am now going to start working on some new fresh pieces, focusing on certain aspects of music. Thanks again, Damien.

What a relief! It was just another squirrel all along! Whiskers and the other squirrel are cautious to meet each other but they walk up to each other slowly and carefully, ready to run at any moment in case something happens. Whiskers thinks to himself about all that fear and chaos he felt earlier that was all for nothing, he is very relieved to find out that the scary creature he was so scared about was just another squirrel.Whiskers doesn’t have many other friends so he’s happy to find someone else in these woods to become friends with. The scary abandoned house that they’re in seems to fade away now that he feels comfortable with this other squirrel. What an adventure it has been so far, from finding this abandoned house to running for his life to making a new friend. I wonder what her name is?

The starting point for this piece was just reflect the breathing in and out of the morning air. The piece begins with a slow, flowing left hand which prepares the entrance of the melody in the right hand. The melody floats above the right and takes it’s time as if it’s breathing or flowing with the air. there are quite a few different motifs/melodies in this piece which could be representative of the changing nature of the wind and air throughout the day. There are moments when it is more calm and still, moments when it is flowing freely and rapidly around, and there are moments when it is more active and creates a whirlwind. While the sudden change between different themes is ok, If I wrote this piece again, I would try to create a better connection between them.

The title of this piece also heavily influenced the direction of this composition. I think I began with the ostinato idea that is heard at the beginning and then thought of the title as I was continuing to write the piece. The ostinato is meant to create a sparkly sound that ebbs and flows slowly and quickly throughout the piece. The piece slowly evolves as it goes on with new additions in both the right hand and the left hand and the melody toward the end of the piece is slowly revealed after many iterations from the very beginning.I think one of the really important aspects of this piece is the phrasing as it really is one continuous idea that doesn’t stop until the very end. The phrasing is essential for the piece to make sense and breath naturally. So the dynamics, use of rubato, and accents are all very important tools to be used in order to bring out the true nature of this piece.

The idea for ‘Sunrise’ actually came from a 30 day composition challenge in which you had to write a new idea for a piece every day for 30 days. I think the prompt for this one was a sunrise, hence the name of the piece. I think when I was writing the piece, I imagined watching a colourful sunrise amongst the rolling hills of the countryside which fade into the horizon. This is the only piece with a flute along with the piano which I think works well for this piece as it’s a relatively simple one.

There’s a funny little story with how I wrote this piece. I’ve got these dice called ‘Rory’s Story Cubes’ which have little pictures on them and they’re meant to be an ice breaker where you roll the dice and come up with a story based on the images that come up. Anyway, I thought of using them to help me come up with an idea for a new composition. So I rolled some of the dice and there was a picture of a fire, a house, and someone running - something like that, I can’t remember exactly what the pictures were. Then that prompted me to write this composition: ‘Fire in the House’. It was a great way to try something new and write something that I never would have thought to write if it were not for those dice.Through the piece I have written little annotations to explain what is happening in the story of the piece of music and the scene I was trying to reflect in the music. It was a fun little piece to write and I really enjoyed using the dice to come up with a story for me to write about - I should definitely do it more often to try something new and get out of my comfort zone. I highly recommend you pick some up one day if you write music too - they’re a great tool to have!

This piece takes you on a journey of the rain starting to come down drop by drop to pattering down in the morning. The piece begins with slow moving chords that represent the rain starting to come down drop by drop. As the left hand moves onto an arpeggio accompaniment the rain starts to become more active. Then the melody also becomes more active with the faster rhythm. Finally, for the rest of the piece the right hand plays semiquaver arpeggios as the rain is coming down more rapidly than before. The melody has moved to the right hand and could reflect the larger raindrops pattering down on the ground. The rain finally comes to an end at the end of the piece where it slows down and quietens.

This piece originally began with the idea of the repeated chords in the right hand which I came up with near the end of 2018. I stumbled across this chord progression and developed it into the first eight bars of the composition. I liked the sound of the main section so I decided to use a Rondo form which is structured as ABACA with section A as the repeated chords in the right hand.It was a lot of fun to write this piece and I learnt many new things whilst writing, especially creating a good structure and developing the A section when it returns throughout the piece. The middle, near to the end section with the Alberti bass gives it a nice break between all of the heavy repeated notes. That's one thing I would have done differently in this piece; separate it a little bit more from the heavy repeated chords.The context and idea behind this piece is a bit more abstract than my other pieces as I usually aim to have a story behind my music but it was born out of a musical idea rather than a philosophical one. However, it seems to convey a frantic mood as well as some times for rest and slowing down.There are some sections that I personally think are still a bit basic, which I think with more experience I will be able to write better. I would have to say the start of the second page, or the ascending chords part sounds quite nice. Overall, I'm fairly happy with the end result, and I have another piece to fully release in the near future. I plan on narrowing down certain parameters to further develop my composition techniques and skills.

Throughout, the rhythm maintains a consistent patter, reminiscent of raindrops, interspersed with sporadic bass notes that mimic distant thunder. Short, arpeggiated figures add texture, evoking the rumbling of an approaching storm.Structurally, I employ a through-composed format, crafting a narrative arc that follows the ebb and flow of the storm's intensity. Central to this structure is a broken chord motif, initially presented as quavers and later evolving into semiquavers. As this motif transfers between hands, it symbolises the shifting dynamics of the storm, heightening the piece's dramatic tension and adding depth to its narrative.

This is the second album that I have released and it is another soft piano album. Ever since I published my first album ‘Sunday’ I have been wanting to write another one because I enjoyed writing the first one so much. I wanted to write even better pieces than the first one as well as a couple more pieces too. When thinking about a theme for this album, I decided to go for the season of summer and write music that reminds me of summer such as the warm breeze, the fragrance of the trees and flowers, and the sparkle of the sun on the water.In a lot of the pieces in this album, I explored the line between the ambient and melodic world with some pieces featuring a strong melody while others cycle through a chord progression in a certain pattern. This is something that I like to explore in a lot of my music as I think a melody is a great way to make a piece of music memorable but I also find that less melodically driven pieces still have their place in telling a story or setting a mood.So, if you are listening to this album or learning it, I hope that you find each piece enjoyable and that there is one that sticks out to you as your favourite. My intention is for you to listen to them while you drive, study, work, or have a rest or do anything else to make those moments a little more enjoyable and special. A shadow! Whiskers heart begins to race once again, he needs to get out of here as quick as he can, something else is here and it could be out to get him. Whiskers jumps out of the attic and scurries down the stairs. He needs to be quick though because he can hear the other creature not far behind him. He looks for an exit out of the house but he has no luck. Time is running out and he needs to get out or hide before he is caught.Whiskers finds a safe spot to hide once again behind a rotting bookshelf that does a decent job to conceal himself. He can relax now but he needs to be quiet to make sure that the other creature doesn’t find him. He waits for a while and doesn’t hear much movement but he can’t be too sure. Whiskers thinks that the other creature must have lost interest and ventured elsewhere so he decides to leave his hiding spot and explore the house some more.
