SKU: A0.1493246

Composed by Clarence Williams and Spencer Williams. Arranged by L.C. Harnsberger. Blues,Chamber,Historic,Jazz,Standards. 26 pages. LCH Music #1069899. Published by LCH Music (A0.1493246).

“Royal Garden Blues” was written by Clarence and Spencer Williams in 1919, and first became a hit in 1921 when it was recorded by The Original Dixieland Jazz Band. It is considered the first popular song to be based on a riff (a repetitive short rhythmic phrase) and is now a jazz standard.

This timeless blues song has since been performed by bands led by Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, Tommy Dorsey, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Al Hirt; blues artists Mamie Smith, Ethel Waters, and Ella Fitzgerald; legendary performers Bix Beiderbecke, Sidney Bechet, Pete Fountain, Django Reinhardt, Art Tatum; and more recently by Chet Atkins, Herb Ellis, Branford Marsalis, and the Canadian Brass.

This woodwind quintet arrangement is based on the upbeat recording by pianist Cliff Jackson, giving it an unmistakable 1940s stride feel with relentless rhythm and colorful harmonies. Each player has interesting parts, making it enjoyable for both performers and the audience. This fun and exhilarating piece is perfect for any concert.

SKU: A0.1379216

By Whitney Houston. By C.D. Martin and Charles H. Gabriel. Arranged by Amy J. Snyder. Christian,Religious,Sacred. Score. 5 pages. Amy J. Snyder #963883. Published by Amy J. Snyder (A0.1379216).

His Eye Is on the Sparrow, a beautiful, classic Gospel song, for advanced intermediate piano solo. Written in 1905 by Charles Gabriel and Civilla D, Martin, this song was sung by Ethel Waters and used in her biography. Whitney Houston made this song popular again in the 1976 movie Sparkle, in which the plot was inspired by the history of The Supremes singing trio, in the late 1950's-early 60's in Harlam, New York. Use lots of expression in the first verse and ending; more motion in the 2nd verse and chorus. Key of F Major, helpful fingering suggested. If you enjoy this arrangment, check out other arrangements by Amy including No One Ever Cared For Me Like Jesus, Amazing Grace, If My People, Near the Cross, Christ the Lord is Risen Today, Christ Arose (Up From the Grave), O the Deep Deep Love of Jesus, and many more! SKU: A0.808689

Composed by W. Benton Overstreet (1888-1935). Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Graduation,Holiday,Jazz,Traditional. Score and parts. 30 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #4331333. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808689).

William Benton Overstreet did it all-played piano, wrote songs, led bands. Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since.
This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper.
For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments.
Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64.
This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, would be very interested in your comments; contact him at lessmith@ufl.edu. For more arrangements by Les, enter Sweetwater Brass Press (without the quotation marks) in the SheetMusicPlus search box.

SKU: A0.1288894

By Andy Kirk & His 12 Clouds Of Joy. By Alberta Nichols, L.E. Freeman, Mann Holiner, Sammy Cahn, and Saul Chaplin. Arranged by Dave Gingras and John E. Dosher. Broadway,Film/TV,Jazz,Musical/Show. Score. 3 pages. DAVID LEE GINGRAS #879734. Published by DAVID LEE GINGRAS (A0.1288894).

In 1931, Alberta Nichols wrote the music and Mann Holiner wrote the words for a song titled Till the Real Thing Comes Along which was featured in a Broadway revue titled Rhapsody in Black. The review, produced by Lew Leslie, was similar to the famous Blackbirds reviews of the late 1920s and 1930s, and featured Ethel Waters, who introduced Till the Real Thing Comes Along. This version features a root-based chord blocking that John and I have used in a number of our arrangements and was developed from the 1936 sheet music. We also added some pretty cool left-hand fills to keep things moving along smoothly. We hope you like what we've done with this grand old tune!
