The melody of the spiritual is given to the right hand throughout, with variation coming through the left-hand accompaniment. The refrain is presented twice, first with a dotted-rhythm Alberti bass and then with dotted-rhythm repeated octaves. The verse is set once, with the accompaniment doubling the melody two octaves lower and with a G-pedal point throughout. The last few measures include rising chromatic major chords covering the span of an octave before returning to the G-major tonic.

The piano plays contiuously, while the flute and violin parts require the performers to count rests. The last four measures of the melody are used as an interlude linking the verses, and at the very end of the piece all three parts repeat this phrase for a fitting conclusion.
