Bach's classic Bourrée in E minor arranged for guitar in a jazz-swing-blues style, with walking bass lines on guitar, melody figures swung, and harmonic passages adapted towards a cool jazz and bluey idiom. It's actually a bit more difficult than the original--because the swung melody and bass lines are syncopated rather than matched... but it is very cool and fun to play, and a great showpiece for an intermediate level guitarist! Brad studied from and was mentored by jazz guitar giant Joe Pass, and took a master class from Andrés Segovia, so this arrangement bridges both musical worlds--jazz and classical--that he came up in.

ABOUT: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso, and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Brad also played as the solo guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at Disney's Grand Californian Resort by Disneyland (March 2019-January 2024), providing music for the Disney Princesses (Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Mulan, Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and their friends and guests).

The Kingdom of Light, 3 pages, is an intermediate piece in the key of G, is the first piece from a fairy tale suite of 8 pieces entitled The Kingdom of Light. This work tells the story of a beautiful kingdom where the people are always singing and dancing. A place with glorious sunsets and sparkling seashores, with no evil lurking anywhere...until one day the Dark Knight arrives. Can the Prince save his lovely Princess? Can peace and safety be restored once more?   For individual student enjoyment as well as for recital programs. The recordings have narration and character voice overs followed by the piano piece that tells the story. Churches can use this for religious purposes as this can be allegorical in nature.

The solo, The Kingdom of Light, is in 12/8 time, has rolled chords, octave playing, legato fingering outside of a 5 finger position, wide dynamic changes, octave position changes, staccatos and accents. Students with small hands can play single notes instead of octaves when necessary.

This is a Lullaby from the fairy-tale opera Sadko by Russian composer N.A. Rimsky-Korsakov. Volkhova was a daughter of the King of Sea. She fell in love with an adventurer, merchant and a singer Sadko. He wins her heart with his songs; and the whole Underwater kingdom goes wild when they hear his music. The sea is storming and many boats are destroyed. God had to stop this and punished the Underwater kingdom. Volkhova is singing the Farewell lullaby to her beloved sleeping Sadko: she is turning into a river and he will never see her again as a Princess.

I also have a simpler looking version with mainly just the melody. This version has the guitar chord charts notated in tablature and sheet music making for a more sophisticated version. I often lean more towards making something idiomatic for guitar rather than complete historical accuracy, and this piece is no different. IMSLP is the best place to go if you are really looking for the originals. The melody seems to be intact, but I take some liberties with the harmony to make it flow well on guitar. This version also only has the main theme. Also, since I make these primarily as a learning tool, making a super lengthy full version is not ideal. 1. Guitar tablature added. 2. Harmonies changed to be idiomatic for guitar 3. Octave differences 4. Famous excerpt only 5. Guitar chord charts added 6. Composer indications added. 7. Letter names added to aid in sight-reading.
