My idea to have opposing cornets at either side of the stage taking the solo then on 2nd time using technical brinkmanship to out-do each other on the embellishing. You need two very good soloists.

Written for 3 solo instruments (2 vln’s & Vc) and string continuo I have explored the works more antiphonal prospects for brass band and completely changing the band’s seating format to encompass a large arc formed in front and to the side of the audience to give a stereophonic picture left and right. All sections and soloists get to shine in this (2 movement work at present) work which fits as a great opener at a church venue, and dare I say a baroque work such as this fits right into a Christmas programme?

I’m sure that desires and ideals might be listed above. Besides the history of bands 180 years ago having no music and those within arranged popular tunes of the day and great classic symphonic works (often truncated), not al lots has changed apart from the fantastic influx of composed works for band over the last 60+ years, there’s also been a steady influx of orchestral works form the 1980’s as the technical facility of players has grown beyond belief, for EG. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two. In the same vein I have recently released Romeo & Juliet Tchaikovsky recently premiered in London by The Fulham Band, and today I let fly again one of the best known musical works in the world yet so far either not arranged because of over all length and technical difficulty, or just too harder work for the arranger? First recorded by my teacher Alan Stringer to which this arrangement is dedicated to, accompanied by the organist of the Liverpool Anglican Cathedral Noel Rawsthorn recording it in 1974 under the CRD label. The album repertoire mostly chosen by Alan was from the trumpet repertoire itself Noel suggested that this wonderful late baroque organ moment by Fiocco would suite the instrument well and also make a good contrast to the album.Some years later in 1986, I managed to use the piece with Noel Rawsthorn’s pupil and now organist of the Anglican, Ian Tracy in a recital in the Lady Chapel in the Anglican. I played from the top line organ part and Ian in a true baroque style filled out the rest from a meager bass line. So I now present it in full and with a choice of trumpets for the ubiquitous trumpet and organ recital, for piccolo A, picc G, tpt in Eb and tpt in D parts included.

Many jazz charts for brass band have been notated in a variety of ways, a lot in the old dotted quaver/semiquaver fashion which either including a triplet bracket or not is confusing, misleading and plainly inaccurate. So, to a young band of the 9/14 years, my approach is to give them just 2 notes to start, the longer and the shorter i.e Doo-da! And build ever so slightly from there also giving them a chance to chant the title The Brass Band Boo-gie. So in a simple non-running around many notes, we have very few, but put together with other swing rhythms in the piece we get a swung piece, also inc, some quavers (8th’s) not to swing and play straight a reminder to change! In my title, the word Impressions is used to describe the harmonic style which is decidedly French of a Darius Mihaud style or even a light Messian. It should keep the young players on their toes in an aural sense and the tuning of a challenge, and perhaps feeling rather musically grown up delivering this in a concert?
