Written for 3 solo instruments (2 vln’s & Vc) and string continuo I have explored the works more antiphonal prospects for brass band and completely changing the band’s seating format to encompass a large arc formed in front and to the side of the audience to give a stereophonic picture left and right. All sections and soloists get to shine in this (2 movement work at present) work which fits as a great opener at a church venue, and dare I say a baroque work such as this fits right into a Christmas programme?

For the end finale to a concert or encore, or in a church service or in memoriam this will fit the bill like no other.

I’m not quite sure how these flashes of ideas come to me to arrange, but this time I admit that its a more of a  jaw drop than It’s Not Unusual when I first told some friends.

There’s no doubt that this is one of the saddest and yet beautiful works ever, The Urlicht from Mahler’s 2nd Symphony in C minor for alto voice and alternatively here for Flugel solo. I arranged this 14 years ago for a dear friend trumpeter of mine who passed before his time and a favourite of his.I discovered Mahler 2 at the age of 16 and like Kaplin, it has been a journey of understanding and study for me sifting through Mahler’s own handwritten score at times and through his letters at the time of composing which on and off was near 20 years! The recording you will here attached is by The Fairey Band (from my album with them It's Not Unusual worldofbrass) conducted by Frank Renton and sung by one of the most beautiful alto voices in this land, Margaret McDonald. I’ve no doubt in my mind this arrangement works 100% hence me including the recording itself. Alternatives within the score are Picc A tpt in lieu of Sop, the solo line flg instead of mezzo voice, vibraphone instead of harp.

The Dies Irae really does not have an end as such so I have manufactured a solution to work as a concert item, and if with choir this is also easy to work out the scenario.

Undoubtedly a 100% entertainment concert show-stopper and was used once at BIC Gateshead by the Fairey Band. Make Em' Laugh.

Brass Bands like whiz and to show of difficult transcribed orchestral works, but here is some refined whiz which cannot be attacked in a 21st C style. Pure classical, requires refinement of the blow, must flow with ease without sense of struggle. This last movement of Haydn's symphony No 104 is a fave of mine, there's no room for bluff, a wrong note will be easily picked out. Armchair technique needed here, even the best bands will have to work to produce the required style and approach!

I’m sure that desires and ideals might be listed above. Besides the history of bands 180 years ago having no music and those within arranged popular tunes of the day and great classic symphonic works (often truncated), not al lots has changed apart from the fantastic influx of composed works for band over the last 60+ years, there’s also been a steady influx of orchestral works form the 1980’s as the technical facility of players has grown beyond belief, for EG. My old mentor and teacher Howard Snell working with Desford and other bands into the 90’s started to arrange orchestral works that A. Were fantastic works of musical caliber (many unknown the the BB rep) and, B. A superb challenge to the band - Daphnis and Chole Suite No 2 Ravel and Pines of Rome Respighi to name just two. In the same vein I have recently released Romeo & Juliet Tchaikovsky recently premiered in London by The Fulham Band, and today I let fly again one of the best known musical works in the world yet so far either not arranged because of over all length and technical difficulty, or just too harder work for the arranger?
