Brass Ensemble - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.817619

Composed by James Bland. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Folk,Spiritual,Traditional. Score and parts. 28 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #424503. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.817619).

James Alan Bland, composer of “In the Evening by the Moonlight,” was a prolific song writer.  He is said to have created the words and music for more than 600 compositions.  Born in 1854 to a free African American family in Flushing, New York, he made a name for himself as musician, composer and minstrel performer.  Among his compositions were “Oh, Dem Golden Slippers,” “In the Morning in the Bright Light” and “De Golden Wedding.”  His most famous song by far was “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny,” which the State of Virginia used as its official anthem for over 50 years.

Bland, in keeping with his persona as a minstrel, wrote the lyrics to “In the Evening by the Moonlight” in dialect.  Years passed and sensitivities changed, but the song’s poignant melody and basic sentiment survived.  Latter day recordings, such as those by Bing Crosby and the Ray Charles Singers, dropped the dialect and objectionable terms.  One of the most notable versions was by singer, pianist and civil rights activist Nina Simone, released in 1960 on the album Nina at Newport.

This brass quintet version begins with the group instrumentally humming along under an eight-measure Horn in F introduction.   The first statement of the melody initially takes the form of a partial call-and-response between a Trombone/Horn duo and Trumpet 1, then switches to an exchange between Trumpet 1 and Tuba.  Next, the melody is repeated but in a rhythmic pattern reminiscent of the 1880 tune “Here Dem Bells”; Tuba plays counterpoint.  Third time around, the melody is presented almost exactly as Bland wrote it and as Hitchcock’s Music Store published it in 1880.  Finally, the tempo slows and the melody is presented as so many have sung it around campfires at YMCA, 4-H and other youth camps all over the country:  softly and tenderly.  The arrangement ends with a brief recapitulation of the introduction.

There are no really difficult or tricky rhythms in this arrangement.  Trumpet 1’s highest note, which occurs in Section D, is A above its staff; Tuba’s lowest, G below the staff.  Otherwise, there are no exceptionally high or low notes.  The piece opens in the key of F major then, about halfway through, changes to G major.  Tempo opens with a suggested MM of 104, speeds up to 120, slows to 66, increases again to 122 and finally slows to 66.

Completed in 2022, performance time runs about 4 minutes, 22 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge.  He would also like to receive your suggestions, comments, corrections and criticisms.  Contact him directly at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.  For more arrangements by Les, enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the SheetMusicPlus or Sheet Music Direct search box.  (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at lessmith61@bellsouth.net.)

By Perry Como. By Al Stillman and Robert Allen. Arranged by John Fries. 20th Century,Christmas,Holiday,Pop,Standards. Lead Sheet / Fake Book. 2 pages. John Fries #1064381. Published by John Fries (A0.1487434).

TYPE JOHN FRIES IN THE SEAQRCH BAR TO SEE ALL I HAVE TO OFFER. Thanks, John. (There's No Place Like) Home for the Holidays is a 1954 song commonly associated with the Christmas and holiday season. The lyrics detail the joys of being in your home community during the holidays and give examples of how some people will travel long distances to be with their loved ones. The music was composed by Robert Allen, with the lyrics written by Al Stillman. The best-known recordings of Home for the Holidays were made by Perry Como, who recorded the song twice, both times accompanied by Mitchell Ayres' Orchestra and the Ray Charles Singers. Perhaps the most iconic version of the song, other than the original Perry Como version, is the Carpenters’ recording on their 1984 LP release, An Old Fashioned Christmas.

TEXT:
The Spirit of the Lord is upon us.
Send your Spirit upon us in this time and place, the Spirit who gives us comfort, the Spirit who brings light to our eyes, the Spirit who helps us say yes to your summoning Word.
Bless us, Father, as you have done before, with the gift of your Spirit that he may stir new life within us.
Blest are you in ev'rything that your Spirit makes new, now and for all ages to come.

The source of this text is unknown. Though appropriate for Pentecost there is no direct connection to the scripture readings or sacramentary prayers for that Feast. The composition was written in the early years succeeding Vatican II (October 11, 1962 – December 8, 1965), a time of creative freedom. The language is period specific to that time, yet the music is universal.

Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.888138

Composed by Percy Mayfield. Arranged by Erin Craig. A Cappella. Octavo. 10 pages. Erin Craig #4569707. Published by Erin Craig (A0.888138).

This is a sassy, up-tempo a cappella arrangement of Ray Charles' hit song! It's voiced for SAATB, and can be performed by ensembles of any size, with or without amplification. This is a great piece to work on with a vocal jazz ensemble for swing syncopations and part independence. Bass singers have the opportunity to work on their walking bass and vocal percussion skills.
Performance notes are included with suggestions on how to incorporate improvisation and how to approach ensemble diction in a stylistically appropriate way.
Intermediate choirs who perform this piece unamplified will have equal success. The harmonies are simple and the vocal lines are intuitive which makes this a great piece in which to practice a cappella singing and intonation.
A piano reduction is included for rehearsal purposes.
This would be a great piece to start or end a set with!
Duration: ~ 3'00 - up to 5'00 depending on length of improvisations

SKU: A0.1400023

By The Ray Charles Singers. By Carlos A. Martinoli, Carlos Rigual, and Sunny Skylar. Arranged by Stewart J Wallace. Country,Folk,Latin,Pop,Wedding. 22 pages. Stewart J Wallace #983251. Published by Stewart J Wallace (A0.1400023).

In its Spanish title this song is (almost) guaranteed to make the sun shine - it means when the sun heats up! It's a popular Spanish song with music by Nicaraguan songwriter and bandleader Rafael Gaston Perez, with lyrics by Carlos and Mario Rigual and an English version (not a translation) by Sunny Skylar. Los Hermanos Rigaul recorded the song and it become a number 1 hit in Italy for 4 weeks.

The 12/8 time signature gives the song a lilting quality and the repeated notes drive home the passion of the lyrics. In this arrangement, the Spanish words can be sung on the repeated or used throughout the song, and there are some extra harmony notes in the 3rd voice in the final verse to give the sound more weight.

SKU: A0.1392477

Composed by John David. Arranged by Peter Night and orchestrated by Peet du Toit. A Cappella. 10 pages. Peet du Toit #975998. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1392477).

John David Williams (born 19 January 1946 in Cardiff, Wales) is a Welsh bassist and songwriter known equally for his work with Dave Edmunds and for his songwriting.

In the mid-1970s, David formed a group, Airwaves, along with singer and guitarist Ray Martinez and drummer Dave Charles. In 1978, the group recorded and released an album New Day and a single of the same name (also known as You Are the New Day). The single, performed a cappella, never reached the charts, but was heavily played on radio at the time. A choral version was later recorded by the King's Singers. The song has been covered by some 150 artists around the world. The song So Hard Living Without You got significant airplay in America and peaked at number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 that same year.

Here's a Brass Quintet cover of this exceptionally beautiful composition for your enjoyment.
