Crafted in 1857 by John Henry Hopkins, Jr., “We Three Kings� stands as a perennial ode to the Nativity story, drawing inspiration from the biblical account in Matthew 2, where visitors from the East present gifts to the newborn Jesus. While the Bible does not specify their number or title them as “kings,� Hopkins introduced the imaginative trio — Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar — in his carol, each carrying symbolic gifts that have woven themselves into the fabric of Christmas lore.

The first of these gifts, gold, serves as a regal tribute, symbolizing Jesus as a king and emphasizing his divine authority. It’s a nod to the recognition of his elevated status. Frankincense, the second offering, not only possesses aromatic allure but also holds spiritual significance. In the biblical context, its smoke was thought to carry prayers heavenward, making it a fitting symbol for acknowledging Jesus’ divine nature and spiritual importance.

The third and perhaps most poignant gift is myrrh, an aromatic resin associated with burial rituals. This gift, laden with symbolism, foreshadows Jesus’ sacrificial journey and eventual crucifixion. Myrrh becomes a poignant acknowledgment of the mortality inherent in Jesus’ earthly existence, tying together the joy of his birth with the somber events that would unfold in his life.

DAVID orders a new cart be made for its transport, disregarding the directives from God that only permitted the Levites to move the Ark and only carried with the poles on their shoulders [Role it on Down the Highway – Ahio and David’s Troops]. When the Ark reaches the threshing-floor at Nacon, the oxen stumble and Uzzah puts his hand out to steady it and is instantly killed. Unlike modern clocks and digital watches, in which every single second has its own momentary significance, telling time by sundial is more evolutionary. The seconds, and hours, melt into one another. It is perhaps for this reason that sundials have often been conceived not only as practical time pieces, but as works of art, metaphors, and creations that are inherent expressions of the personality of their creators. Etched in many sundials across the world, in Latin, English, German, and other languages are often found mottoes that reflect the thoughts of the sundial's creator. These mottoes can be fatalistic, humorous, transient, morbid, or serene, and almost always involve the subjects of time, the passing of the hours, life and its brevity, or metaphors involving shadows. Many times these mottoes feature some witticism, such as I only count the sunny hours (since a shadow must be present for a sundial to function). Other times, they can be revealingly existential (We are but shadow), and other times offer advice (Use the hours, don't count them).

It is these statements of philosophy, etched in sundials throughout the centuries, that most interests me. I am currently composing a set of movements for piano trio (Piano, Violin, Cello) dedicated to the mottoes found on sundials, and their significance to me. The first movement, subtitled Tempus Edax Rerum (Time devours things) is expansive and attempts a feeling of eternity, into which all seemingly fast moving workings of human beings are inevitably subsumed. For the second movement I am considering the phrase Pereunt et Imputantur (They pass and are counted referring to the hours of the day), and its implication of the way in which time can slip away, whether we observe it or not.

2. A Little Baby - original song is written for duet. A Little Baby in a stall - A Little Baby oh so small - A Little baby born for all - A Little Baby
3. Pachelbel Canon Christmas medley - this iconic song has lyrics from 4 Christmas songs - While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night, Away in a Manger, What Child is This and The First Noel. There are parts where one part will ahh while the other sings the lyrics and then parts where they both sing the lyrics together in harmony. So pretty.
4. They Saw a Star - original song about the star leading people to Bethlehem
5. We Three Kings - uses the lyrics of We Three Kings, but the melody of Scarborough Fair - it flowed very well together.
and has a different harmony than the Simon and Garfunkel version. Fun to perform.

This arrangement of We Three Kings is an excerpt from Christmas Suite 1225 (Part 1) - a new album by The Candlelight Guitarist (aka Bradley Powell). It features fingerstyle classical guitar, with a fresh chordal interpretation, moving bass and internal lines, and other distinctive stylistic features. We Three Kings can be seen and heard in the Candlelight Guitarist YouTube video of Christmas Suite 1225 (Part 1) beginning at 1:07 (see YouTube timeline).

ABOUT: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Brad has also played as the solo guitarist for Disney's Princess Breakfast Adventure at Disney's Grand Californian Resort by Disneyland (since its opening week), providing music for the Disney Princesses (Belle, Tiana, Jasmine, Rapunzel, Mulan, Aurora, Ariel, Pocahontas, Cinderella, and their friends and guests).

We Three Kings is on Peaceful Solo Piano Christmas 2, Louis Landon's 25th album/CD and 18th solo piano album.

Louis Landon is a composer and Steinway artist. Formerly of New York and currently living in Sedona, Arizona, Louis has dedicated his life to music. His career has taken him around the world playing a variety of styles with some of the most recognized names in the entertainment industry. He toured nationally and internationally, playing classical music for Mikhail Baryshnikov; jazz fusion with The John Payne Band; Latin music with Pucho and his Latin Soul Brothers; pop music with Rupert Pina Colada Song Holmes; and rock & roll with John Hall, opening for Little Feat.

Louis began playing the piano by ear at 4 years old and began lessons at 5. As a teenager, he played guitar and keyboard in bands and went on to study music at Stony Brook University, Boston Conservatory and Berklee College of Music.

For the past 30 years, through his production company, Landon Music Company, Louis has written and produced music for film, video, and commercials. He recorded his first original album, Love Songs & Jazz, in 1994 and has since released 38 Albums/CDs on the LCI Record label. His latest, entitled Provocative Piano, was released on January 29, 2021. He has just finished up yet another solo piano album, Nighttime Piano for Relaxation and Deep Sleep, with a release date of April 23, 2021.
