Originally written for clarinet and piano, Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work composed by Kara Williams (drawing on her own time at sea in the Navy) that has been re-orchestrated for Viola and Piano by the composer.

A suite of four short programmatic movements, we first follow a young sailor as they stagger around the deck on their first voyage - finally succumbing to the corkscrew motion of the ocean in Sea Sick Shanty; then enjoying a moment of peace and beauty as the ship sails through an Archipelago teaming with marine life; in Brew Time March, the young sailor excitedly hears the bugle call to have a break from work (brew time), grab a coffee and sit on the bow to watch the waves and lost in thoughts, they unexpectedly hears the sound of work recommencing, and scurry back, making it just in the nick of time, waiting eagerly for next the next call for Brew Time - and the preparation, spectacle, pride, and excitement of Sailing into Harbour concludes this suite suitable for an intermediate to more advanced player looking for something entertaining and a little bit different.

Suite in Sea is a fun and quirky work for solo clarinet and piano composed by Kara Williams. Each movement draws on inspiration from Kara’s own time at sea serving in the military imagined as a suite of four short programmatic movements.

BRIEF PROGRAMME NOTE: Here are my arrangements of three pieces by William Byrd.

O Magnum Mysterium is a setting of a text from the Holy Matins of Christmas describing the wonderment of the animals as they gaze on Christ: “O great mystery and wonderful sacrament, that animals should see the newborn Lord, lying in a manger!� William Byrd, Father of English church music made his setting in 1607.

Malt's Come Down was a bawdy song from the 16th C, fulll of doubles entendres. Byrd made variations on the tune. My source: Fitzwilliam Virginals Book.

The Maidens Song is poetic and sung by a young man about an amorous adventure. My source: My Lady Nevell's Book of Virginals Music, Dover edition pp 149 seq

DURATION: 11 minutes

INSTRUMENTATION: String quartet or string orchestra with optional double bass.

Musings Suite is a four movement original work for Brass Trio - Bb Trumpet, F Horn and Trombone.  The total time of the four movements is eight minutes and fifty seconds at the indicated tempos.   The audio clip on this web site is a composite of segments from each movement.   These segments range from about 30 seconds to 1 minute.  The piece is generally written in a modern or 20th century style that is not dependent on classic style harmonies.  This piece is probably requires 
at least advanced high school players for successful performance.  Parts are highly chromatic and ,although finale inserted
key signatures when instrument transpositions were made, there is really no key, only tonal centers.  The piece is suitable for recital or concert settings.   The download file contains a full score of each movement and parts for Trumpet, Horn and Trombone.  Including the title page there are 42 pages total in the file.  Each instrument will have seven pages of music and the rest is the score.

The Introduction of this suite is for two Cornets alone followed a full band restatement. The percussion parts include Timpani and Drum Set. There are also parts for Horns in Eb and F. Very suitable for a Wedding or a Graduation Ceremony or general performance…

King William's March was composed in honor of William of Orange who had become King of England following the Glorious Revolution of 1688. Clarke's better known Prince of Denmark's March which follows, honored William's brother-in-law Prince George of Denmark.

Trumpet Voluntary - The most celebrated trumpet voluntary is the Prince of Denmark's March, a composition by Jeremiah Clarke written circa. 1700. It is properly a rondo for keyboard and was not originally called a trumpet voluntary. It is very popular as wedding music and was played at the 1981 wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales, and Lady Diana Spencer. [Wikipedia]
