Nina requested a Nocturne in the Phrygian mode that would resemble the style of Chopin. Her favorite composer is Chopin, and loves his nocturnes. She has written a poem about Chopin. Nina began her first year of college during the pandemic, and is consequently a virtual student. Her major is Bio-Engineering. During high school, she has accompanied choirs and solo- ensemble festivals, participated in many solo piano events, and completed all the requirements of the OMTA syllabus. Because she is attending college virtually and is living with her family locally, she continues to study piano with her long-time OMTA piano teacher. Nina also has earned a black belt in Karate; and she likes skiing and fashion. The piece is part of a collaboration between composers and students. It is a project of the Oregon Music Teachers Association and the Cascadia Composers chapter of NACUSA (National Association of Composers USA). The annual concert, titled In Good Hands, features original compositions that are chosen by OMTA teachers for their students. In 2021, the project includes individualized collaboration where composers wrote for specific students. The composers met with the students, and together they decided on a composition written according to the requests of the student.

He also likes science, drawing, technology, and travel - especially flying. He would like to be a pilot someday. Brian requested a fast piece, not too long, tonal, in the key of G - kind of like Clementi. This is part of a collaboration between composers and students. His hobbies are Minecraft, Lego, Ninjago, Chima, How to be a Ninja, and Pokemon. Lucas has two favorite chords: F# major and minor, and he likes to play both hands together. He also likes to play fast, and to have dynamics like forte-piano-forte. This piece is built on F# major and minor, with added diminished. Using letters and finger numbers, and advancing through several positions, students work through the challenge to enjoy playing and singing the songs! They love sharing them with family and friends! The songs can be adapted to many teaching styles and method books. The positions range from middle C position, C position, and a variety of positions to accommodate the melody of each song. Words have been added to help the student adapt rhythm to the way the words are sung. Flexible rhythm gives hints to the student of what is to come in future lessons, and teachers can adapt them accordingly. Eighth notes are used in some instances where the feel of the rhythm dictates, making them a necessity. Mixolydian Sonatina is a fun piano solo based on the Mixolydian mode with hints of Western harmonic structure.  The three movements each have different qualities, but are unified by harmonic and rhythmic motifs.  Each movement offers its own fun and some surprises!  Composer notes give suggestions for students to become familiar with the structure and sound of the mode. An mp3 of the first movement is included; however, mp3s of the other two movements are available at no charge from the composer.  A recent commission, the Sonatina was premiered 4/24/21.  Have fun with this unique sonatina!

Dance of the Lanna is a portrayal of a festival in Northern Thailand; Lanna refers to the people there, and the festival celebrates rebirth of their heritage.  The festival is comprised of several dances depicting events of nature; this piece portrays two of the dances: Dance of the Silk Weaver and Water is Life.  The piece opens with portrayal of expressive Thai flute solo, proceeding to portrayal of Thai string orchestra and the PiNai oboe, leading to fast-paced announcement of dancers, moving into the themes of each dance. The style is slow, dramatic, unique movements, appearance of simplistic (but difficult) dances, using piano techniques unique to the style of Thai music.  The piece was written for a piano student who wanted to portray music of his country on the piano. Published by Liz Nedela (A0.1363503). Puppetry is an ancient art form in Thailand (formerly, Siam), and there are several types of puppetry. Traditional hun lek puppetry is the type represented in this piece. The large puppets require three people (master puppeteers) to work the puppets and dance in unison on stage.  The puppet shows are accompanied by specific music and narration that tell the story.  The puppets are designed from an ancient art form: Kohn, and are extremely intricate.  The story is of Good Triumphs over Evil and is based on a legend of Ramaikien.  In playing this piece, follow the score instructions carefully, following phrases and no pedal.  This is a different type of music than is normally performed on piano, but try to envision the instruments, the actions of the puppets, the movements of the puppeteers, and the style of music.  There was no piano in ancient Siam, and the music is very unlike any used in traditional Western music.  See YouTube links printed in the structural notes of the score for further education; the mp3 is from computer notation.  There is no recording of the performance.  This piece was written by request of a piano student who wanted to play music from his home country: Thailand.  Please see other pieces in the composer's catalog: Dance of the Lanna, and Sounds of Siam.
