In the 19th Century the Paris Conservatoire was a veritable pool of talents. Here the French violinist Jean Delphin Alard also acquired his final musical polish. However, there was not much left for him to learn by then, for he had already performed a violin concerto by Viotti in his native Bayonne at the age of ten. Paganini, who subsequently heard him play, was astonished by his technical facility. Alard’s most celebrated pupil was Spanish violinist Pablo de Sarasate. Alard – like Bériot – provided us with concert pieces and tutorial material for the violin, and he was also happy to oblige the demand at Parisian salons for operatic fantasias and entertaining pieces such as this elegant Barcarolle op. 26/1. Plate no. 12030, published in 1852.

Composed by Delphin Alard. This edition: Sheet music. Etudes - study works - practice pieces. Essential Exercises. Downloadable. Op. 41. Schott Music - Digital #Q19997. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q19997).

24 Etudes-Caprices Op. 41 by Delphin Alard (1815-1888) are excellent study material. Alard, the violin teacher of Sasasate, composed these studies in the 24 keys. Due to their musical variety, melodic beauty and cantabile voice leading, they are much more than 'technical studies'; they might be described as 'character pieces' in the best sense. The studies meet the two demands principally made on this genre: to both cover specifically certain technical tasks and be appealing as a music piece so that the musician likes to play them.

Composed by Joseph White. Arranged by Robert Debbaut. Instructional,Latin,Romantic Period,World. 64 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6371729. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939440).

The talents of Cuban-born violinist Joseph White (born José Silvestre de los Dolores White y Lafitte) were recognized by the American pianist and composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869) who had accompanied him on an early recital. Gottschalk raised the money so the young Afro-Cuban virtuoso could go to Paris and study with Jean-Delphin Alard, one of the great violinists and teachers of his day.

White won the Premier Prix at the conservatory in 1855 and received high accolades from such musical giants as Berlioz, Gounod, Rossini, and Saint-Saëns, as well as German violin virtuosi Ferdinand David and Joseph Joachim. Following his 1855 prize (one of several more to come) Joseph White became a major force in the cultural life of Paris for the next twenty years. His Six Studies, Op. 13, demonstrate to those were never privileged to hear him his absolute command of his instrument.

The overall set is dedicated to Alard with individual studies dedicated to Alard and to four of Europe’s premiere violinists, Camillo Sivori, Henri Vieuxtemps, Henryk Wienawski, Hubert Léonard, as well as to his fellow Cuban, Secondino Arango.

These are studies for the serious violinist, or for the advanced student aspiring to achieve the same technical prowess of this incredible virtuoso performer and composer. Contained within this volume are the original exercises, biographies of the six dedicatees, as well as extra information about the life and career of this criminally forgotten violin virtuoso.  These works should be considered for the studios of master teachers and for live performance as virtuoso showpieces, or recital encores, especially number six, which is dedicated to one of White's first teachers, Afro-Cuban violin virtuoso Secundino Arango (179?-1876).

Op. 40. Composed by Auguste Joseph Franchomme. Edited by Beverley Ellis and Rainer Mohrs. This edition: Sheet music. (c) 2020 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Classical. Downloadable. Op. 40. 16 pages. Schott Music - Digital #Q53290. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53290).

English • German.

Auguste Joseph Franchomme was born in Lille on 10.4.1808; he died in Paris in 1884. One of his first cello teachers in Lille was Pierre Baumann, who also taught Edouard Lalo. Giving up the study of Law in favour of the cello, he studied with Jean-Henri Levasseur and Louis-Pierre Norblin from 1825 at the Paris Conservatoire. After that he played in various orchestras until he was eventually able to establish himself as a soloist and chamber musician in Paris. Together with violinist Jean-Delphin Alard he founded the Alard Quartet, one of the few string quartets of the time whose members were all professional musicians. Alongside his concert career, Franchomme was a popular and successful professor at the Conservatoire for almost forty years. His compositions include numerous pieces and studies for the cello, a cello concerto and many transcriptions. Franchomme was a close friend of Chopin: he also composed the cello part to Chopin’s Duo concertante and reworked the cello part for the Polonaise Brillante. Chopin dedicated his Cello Sonata op. 65 to Franchomme. Chopin’s influence is clearly recognisable in Franchomme’s work and particularly evident, for example, in his Étude in C# minor op. 35/11. In 1884 Franchomme was awarded the Légion d’honneur for his services to music. This Fantaisie based on themes from Mozart’s Magic Flute was published in 1873 (plate no. 20425).

Composed by Henry Schradieck. This edition: Sheet music. Essential Exercises. 25 Stücke für Violine. Downloadable. Op. 1. Schott Music - Digital #Q47146. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q47146).

Henry Schradieck chose the modest designation studies for his exercises. Their musical substance, however, goes far beyond that of a study. They are character pieces which get their captivating musical expression particularly from the harmonic progression and expressive melodic lines while the rhythm remains relatively consistent to maximize the effect of practising. The pieces are basically caprices (capriccios) which disregard formal rules in an imaginative and playful manner. 24 Études Caprices by Jean Delphin Alard, the studies cover all major and minor scales of the circle of fifths. In addition to the original fingerings, this edition also contains alternative fingering variants which include both playing in the second position and modern change-of-position techniques like creeping and pivoting. Each study is preceded by short explanations of the editor Benjamin Bergmann concerning the contents and objectives of each study as well as by practical technical information on the performance. This edition is published in the Essential Exercises study series which contains proven practical study works for instrumental lessons.

Méditation religieuse. Composed by Charles Francois Gounod. Edited by Wolfgang Birtel. Arranged by Adolphe Herman. This edition: Sheet music. (c) 2020 Schott Music GmbH & Co. KG, Mainz. Classical. Downloadable. 11 pages. Schott Music - Digital #Q53343. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q53343).

English • German.

Certainly the famous Méditation over the first prelude from Bach’s Well-tempered Clavichord – with the subsequent addition of the words to Ave Maria – has become Charles Gounod’s best-known piece. In the 19th Century, however, one of his other compositions was also very popular: Hymne à Sainte Cécile, a ‘Méditation religieuse’ – in the original version with orchestra (1865) dedicated to his friend Jean Delphin Alard. Gounod had already written one work in honour of the Blessed Cecilia, patron saint of church music, a Mass that became very popular. In contrast, this Hymne is instrumental, with the violin ‘singing’ a lovely melody over a harp-like accompaniment of arpeggios. (Gounod subsequently wrote another setting with the text ‘Ave verum’.) Plate no. 19323, published in 1868.
