This classic blues number was written toward the end of World War I as a patriotic song, extolling men who had qualified for draft exemptions on the basis of supporting a dependent family to be sure to provide that support.   Ultimately sympathy for men supporting dependent families waned and in 1943 this exemption class was retired. There's some story about inspiration coming from a Georgia politician who sired a daughter, and the state legislature passed an act requiring him to name the girl Georgia (hence Georgia named her.)
