But when he came to making a complete draft of the music, he seems to have lost interest during Roderick Usher’s long monologue, even though he was setting his own text. As in No-ja-li he jumped to the next passage that interested him, in this case the exciting final melodrama and the collapse of the Usher house itself.In the process of completing the missing half of the score, I discovered that by reusing Debussy’s material for similar psychological situations across the opera, and by metamorphosing existing ideas (as Debussy does with Mélisande’s theme in his opera Pelléas et Mélisande), the only things I really needed to add were linking material and any passages where fast music was required. So the ‘nightmare scherzo’, and Lady Madeline’s escape from her coffin and her final bloody revenge on her brother are all mine, but most of the rest is existing Debussy in changing contexts (in which the Russian technique of ‘changing backgrounds’, both harmonic and textural, proved extremely useful, as it did to Debussy in his Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune). Eventually, both my completed ballet No-ja-li and the House of Usher were successfully premiered in 2006 and the latter soon began to find its way into the established repertoire in Europe and the US. To further support this, I transcribed some of the highlights of Debussy’s score as A Night in the House of Usher for organ, and subsequently piano—with a focus on Scene 2 and the final, horrific and maca-bre melodrama. This climaxes in the double deaths of Roderick Usher and his Sister Madeline, together with the disintegration of the ill-fated House of Usher into the stagnant lake-all beneath a blood-red moon.In this form it was first performed by Ian Buckle in the Howard Assembly Rooms, Leeds in 2010.

This is a set of three piano miniatures, which, as part of the compositional process, originally derived melodic material by setting lines from Shakespeare's Sonnets to music. In the first piece, within ternary form, the opening section explores sequences of 'chord building'. This is followed by a middle section based on arpeggio figures, before returning to the initial ideas in inversion. In the second piece, also in ternary form, the initial section builds harmonies from a simple two-note rocking idea. Then follows a middle part based on a sequence of semiquaver arpeggio figures, before returning to a variation of the opening section, developing into a 6/8 coda. The third piece is essentially a set of textural variations on a folk-like theme, the tune appearing a fourth higher each time. This final piece employs simple variation techniques that are in-keeping with the folk genre, such as drones, modality, and parallel harmonies. Towards the end, a descending sequence leads to a final variation on the theme in the opening key, in rhythmic augmentation. Klee was fascinated by music (he played the violin) and many composers have interpreted Klee's notion of 'line' as a way to conceive musical melody. Lines on a Walk II is an abridged chamber version of the original Lines on a Walk piece that was flexibly scored in 15 instrumental parts. This second version is specifically written for flute, clarinet, piano, percussion (any 3 apt untuned instruments, plus marimba & vibraphone), violin, and cello. It was written for IXION and first performed by them, conducted by composer Michael Finnissy in 2001. Note: this document is the full score only. The title of the piece reflects its inspiration: the Lantern Tower of Liverpool's Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (1966-67). The tower's sixteen sides contain panels of stained glass, designed by John Piper and Patrick Reyntiens. Their effect is to bathe the cathedral in radiant colour, with three plain panels projecting shafts of brilliant white light through the multi-coloured spectrum. The Lantern Tower (Chorales I) aims to illustrate the intermingling light patterns in a series of chorale-like variations, which, like the tower itself, eventually comes full circle. The work centres around E minor, and states the main motif at the outset (E, G, F#). This is then extended and transformed throughout the course of the piece. An initial introductory motivic passage is followed by a scalic section that features another core concept of the work; that of the octatonic scale (alternating semitones and tones, or vice versa). Then comes the main extended scherzo-like section, itself in a ternary structure, that exploits permutations of the opening motif and the octatonic scale, across the entire range of the cello. The work builds towards a climax, including in extreme high pitch and loud dynamics. After a silence, there follows a very quiet and mysterious muted coda, which briefly recounts the main motivic ideas of the piece, before ending on the only pizzicato note of the work.
