SKU: MQ.8208-E

Composed by Anthony Antolini and Dimitri S. Bortniansky. Arranged by Anthony Antolini. Advanced/Collegiate. Church Anniversary, Confirmation, Memorial, Classical. Instrument part. 10 pages. Duration 4 minutes, 15 seconds. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8208-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8208-E).

French, Russian.

The Russian version, Kol' slaven, sets the poetry of M. M. Kheraskov (1733–1807), a Mason. The hymn was first associated with Freemasonry in Russia, but its popularity quickly grew. It became an unofficial national anthem until it was superseded by Lvov's “God save the Tsar.†Except during the Soviet period (1917–1991), Kol' slaven has been used in Russia at public gatherings and military ceremonies such as the christening of ships, lowering or raising of the flag, and at military funerals. Kol' slaven also became popular among émigré Russians and has been associated with Russian emigration in many countries.

The singing of hymns with multiple verses in chorale style is not a part of Russian Orthodox worship. For this reason, Bortniansky's hymn is not considered liturgical in the Russian Church but is used mostly for secular ceremonies. The language of the hymn is Russian (although with several archaic words and word endings) rather than the language of Russian Orthodox worship, Church Slavonic. In Germany, the hymn is used not only in worship but also for military ceremonies and is occasionally sung as a prelude to the German national anthem.

This scholarly performance edition includes extensive notes concerning the history of Bortniansky and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Russian transliteration.

Duration: 4:15.

Since the year 1984 many people meet at the end of the year in Obermarchtal at the Danube/Donau to sing and make music together. Towards the end of the year 2020 it became very clear that the Corona virus would make it impossible to meet first time since more than 35 years. When I realized that, some words an a melody came to my mind and I wrote this canon for the participants of the Neustifter Musikwoche (www.neustifter-musikwochen.de). We met in some video conferences, talked and had fun in spite of the situation. And I gave this song to the participants to sing it and record the own singing. You can hear and see the result in the youtube channel form the Neustifter Musikwochen. Faith, hope an love are the them of the song, according to 1Kor 13,13. Its intention is not to lose hope and confidence, not even in times like these. Also in 2021 we could not meet singing together in Obermarchtal. But were looking forward hopefully. Note: The edition from 2021 published her contains a few small changes compared to the recording from 2020. ...... SKU: A0.522286

Composed by Various. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Praise & Worship,Sacred. Score and parts. 50 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #6596257. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522286).

We’re really excited to present our collection of sixty of the best-loved hymns ever composed, presented in three books. Arranged for violin, cello and piano they are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. To make the music accessible to less experienced string players, the range of the notes has been kept fairly low so that many of the arrangements can be played in first position, though more experienced players would probably want to avoid open strings. The cello part does not follow the bass but instead plays an independent tenor line using to the mid to upper range of the instrument. The top note in the cello part is the F sharp above the bass clef. The piano part has been kept as straightforward as possible with the left hand playing the bass part.

To extend the possible uses of this collection, there’s also a melody part printed in the bass clef, an octave lower than the violin part. This could of course be used for cello solo or indeed for any other bass clef instrument. Included in the 50-page PDF file is an optional bass part which follows the piano left hand and could be used for string bass or bass guitar. With such a small ensemble, a conductor is hardly necessary and to save on costs the pianist reads from the score. For this reason, the piano part in the score has been slightly enlarged.

Book 1 contains the following twenty popular hymns: Abide with Me (Eventide); All Glory, Laud and Honor (St. Theodulph); All Hail the Power of Jesus' Name (Coronation); All Through the Night (Ar Hyd y Nos); City of God, How Broad and Far (Richmond - Haweis); Fairest Lord Jesus (Crusader’s Hymn); Fight the Good Fight (Duke Street); Forth in Thy Name (Angel's Song, Song 34); Guide Me, O Thou Great Redeemer (Cwm Rhondda); He who Would Valiant Be (Monk’s Gate); Holy, Holy, Holy! (Nicea); I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say (Kingsfold); Jesu, Lover of my Soul (Aberystwyth); Nearer my God to Thee (Bethany); Now Thank We All Our God (Nun Danket); O Worship the King (Hanover); Rejoice, the Lord is King (Darwall’s 148th); Soldiers of Christ, Arise (Diademata); The Lord’s my Shepherd (Crimmond); What a Friend we Have in Jesus (Converse).

The music has been set in string-friendly keys so they are not compatible with the brass or wind publications of the same name. The audio samples include Abide with Me; All Through the Night; I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say; Nearer my God to Thee and What a Friend we Have in Jesus.

Composed by Anthony Antolini and Pavel Grigorievich Chesnokov. Arranged by Anthony Antolini. Advanced/Collegiate. 20th Century, Communion. Instrument parts. 8 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #8248-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.8248-E).

English, Slavonic.

Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi comes from a set of ten communion hymns, Opus 25. It is technically a kontakion, (a hymn sung in commemoration of a feast day, whether referring to Christ, the Virgin Mary, or to a saint). Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi is intended to be sung for the feast day commemorating an icon of the Virgin entitled “The joy of all who sorrow,†(Ð’Ñех ÑкорбÑщих РадоÑÑ‚ÑŒ|Vsekh skorbyashchikh Radost') observed on October 24 in the Orthodox Church calendar. The author of the text is unknown. In contemporary church practice, this work is sometimes sung during the communion of the clergy. Although other pieces in Opus 25 are based on traditional church chants, Nye ímamï inïya pómoshchi contains original music that is not based on any preexisting chant.

The present edition is based on the first edition published in Moscow by Pyotr Ivanovich Jurgenson. The keyboard reduction has been modified from the Jurgenson edition. Russian Orthodox performance practice forbids the use of musical instruments to accompany church singing. Organ accompaniment, if used, should be unobtrusive. The Jurgenson edition includes Chesnokov's use of a quarter note without metronome marking. This indicates that the pulse is in a moderato tempo in quarter notes. A tempo of approximately 69 to the quarter note is suggested. The Jurgenson edition has inconsistent dynamic markings in various parts and text appears only below the soprano and tenor parts. For clarity and convenience, these indications have been included in each staff in the present edition.

This scholarly performance edition includes notes concerning the history of Chesnokov and this piece, performance notes, the editorial method of the English singing version, and a pronunciation guide for the Slavonic transliteration.

Looking for something out of the ordinary for Advent/Christmas? Imagine Mary, the mother of Jesus, as a young Kentucky woman singing her praise song to God (Magnificat) in an Appalachian setting. Then picture Simeon as an elderly West Virginia coal miner/preacher voicing his grateful joy (Nunc Dimittis) at viewing the baby boy Jesus in the temple -- an event that he has waited for his whole life. Translate the traditional Latin of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis into present-day language. Both these events combine to form the refreshingly different extended anthem Mary & Simeon. Written in a natural, unpretentious style for violin (fiddle), cello, and bluegrass instruments, this one-of-a-kind setting of time-honored words promises to bring unexpected joy to worship during this holy season. It includes the congregation in a Gloria that ends both pieces. Extensive performance notes are included in the anthem. Use the anthems together in one service, as part of an Appalachian-themed Advent service, or use them separately on their individual liturgical special days. Whatever use you make of them, these memorable, worshipful offerings surprise and energize worship for your choir and congregation. InstruPax includes parts for piano, bass, acoustic guitars (and optional mandolin), fiddle (violin), cello, and optional drums.

Composed by John D Horman. General. With Narrator. Sacred Anthem. Octavo. 8 pages. Chorister's Guild - Digital #CGA281. Published by Chorister's Guild - Digital (C7.CGA281).

This dramatic setting of the story Christ told about the Good Samaritan has been set by John Horman in a very interesting manner. First, all of the two-part writing is canonic. Secondly, the highly repetitive motive of three notes at the opening helps give the opportunity to concentrate on the drama of the text so that the word is more important than a melody. It also makes for easy learning and memorization so that concentration can be part of the story. An excellent vehicle for clear enunciation, as in 'The Festival Alleluia'. This anthem could also very well be performed with a pantomime dramatization concurrent with the singing.

This new collection of Thanksgiving and Harvest hymns contains all your favorites, or at least, most of them. This is an essential title for any band library or for any ensembles that are called upon to provide music for schools or churches.

There’s also an optional but useful simplified keyboard part intended for less experienced keyboard players. These arrangements are intended either as stand-alone pieces that could be used as interludes in a service, or they could be used to accompany solo, choral or congregational singing. The score and all the parts are contained in a single PDF file.

By Nathan Evans. By Alexander Oriet, David Phelan, and Nathan Evans. Arranged by Joel Jacklich (A.S.C.A.P.). 19th Century,Folk,Multicultural,World. 12 pages. Joel Jacklich #710097. Published by Joel Jacklich (A0.1107440).

New Zealand-based music teacher and folk music compiler Neil Colquhoun claimed to have collected the song around 1966 from one F. R. Woods. Woods, who was in his 80s at the time, had allegedly heard the song from his uncle. it was attributed to one D.H. Rogers. It has been speculated that Rogers was the uncle of Woods and that Rogers had worked as a teenage pirate or shore whaler in the early-to-mid 19th century, composing this and another song in his later years and eventually passing them on to his nephew as an old man. Nathan Evers recorded the work in 2021 during the COVID pandemic and it became a viral sensation with house-bound Tik-Tokers sparking a whole re-introduction of sea shanties in what was termed Shanty-Tok. This string quartet arrangement gives all instruments a chance at the melody, and adds the affectation of a foot-stomp and a shout at the ends of verses. The history of whaling in New Zealand stretches from the late eighteenth century to 1965. In 1831, the British-born Weller brothers Edward, George, and Joseph, who had emigrated to Sydney in 1829, founded a whaling station at Otakou near modern Dunedin in the South Island of New Zealand, seventeen years before Dunedin was established. The Weller brothers had on their voyage to New Zealand brought in the 'Lucy Ann' (the Weller brothers' barque) a good deal of rum and a good deal of gunpowder. From 1833, the Weller brothers sold provisions to whalers in New Zealand from their base at Otakou, which they had named Otago in approximation of the local MÄori pronunciation. The song's lyrics describe a whaling ship called the Billy o' Tea [Note: a billy is a pot in which water is boiled to make tea or coffee] and its hunt for a right whale. The song describes how the ship's crew hope for a wellerman to arrive and bring them supplies of luxuries. According to the song's listing on the website New Zealandfolk Song, the workers at these bay-whaling stations (shore whalers) were not paid wages, they were paid in slops (ready made clothing), spirits and tobacco. The chorus continues with the crew singing of their confidence that the tonguin' will be the last step of their plight. Tonguing in this context refers to the practice of cutting strips of whale blubber to render into oil. Subsequent verses detail the captain's determination to bring in the whale in question, even as time passes and the quartet of whaling boats is lost in the fight. In the last verse, the narrator conveys how the Billy o' Tea is still considered locked in an ongoing struggle with the whale, with the wellerman making his regular call to strengthen the captain and crew.

English
--------
The original version of this emigrant song is quite simple: same melody repeats throughout the song. More, the existing vocal arrangements I've heard are quite steady and not so rhythmic.

So I tried to add some movement: there is a musical introduction with little lyrics and then we move on to the main theme, where the bass gives rhythm to the main melody.

Shortly after, with a Queen-inspired variation coming from Bohemian Rhapsody the score modulates in a close key, to underline the singing of the brothers of the song's sad heroin and immediately after the theme softens to leave room to the sad mother heralding the coming tragedy.

A tragedy that is sung immediately afterwards, in minor, and then returns to the main melody until the finale, where after a choral phrase we return to the main theme.
