Le Tombeau de Couperin is a suite originally for piano, composed between 1914 and 1917. Each of its six movements is dedicated to the memory of friends of the composer who had died fighting in World War 1. Ravel himself was an army driver during the war. Tombeau is a musical term popular in the 17th century meaning a piece written as a memorial. It was Ravel's intention to pay tribute to his friends and pay homage to the sensibilities of the Baroque French keyboard suites, of which Couperin was a master; this is reflected in the six-movement structure of Ravel's piece. This arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet includes the Fugue, Forlane and Toccata. The Prelude, Menuet and Rigaudon are available on SMP Press in another arrangement under separate cover. Each movement is dedicated to the memory of a friend of the composer (or in one case, two brothers) who had died fighting in World War I.The six movements are:Prélude. Vif (E minor)Fugue. This bass line is brought to life with the (optional) use of a bass overdrive pedal such as the Boss ODB3. This transcription has been arranged for both 4-string and 5-string bass guitars. The bass figure prior to the start of the Chorus descends down to a low C (which is outside of the standard range of 4-string basses). The TAB notation in these measures has been modified to accomodate 4-string basses, while the Standard Notation remains as played by Tim Commerford. Planetarium is a progressive piece of concert band literature utilizing frequent meter change and the use of piano and electric bass throughout (slap technique required). Thick harmonies and creative chord progressions make this an exciting piece to play and teach. Electronic drum machines were the inspiration of most of the percussion parts. My goal was to get the feel of a drum pad using everyday percussion instruments. There is also a funk groove created by the use of 3 different sized muted triangles. The piece can be played with 10 percussionists (plus piano and electric bass). The winds and brass are also involved as they get to clap, stomp they’re feet, and tap pencils as part of the various grooves. There are suspended chords through creating a feeling of uncertainty. I have also included an optional space for improvisation to one of the groove sections. You band will enjoy every part of this progressive, hip, funky, original composition.
