It was commissioned after the death of a recent graduate, Tanner Born, a euphonium player who participated in the band for all four years of high school. Tanner's parents funded the commission in his memory and asked that I not just make it a memorial piece, but a celebration of his life. Tanner was an avid bowler (illustrated in the rhythmic and celebratory middle section), golfer, and band member.In the Silence is by turns beautiful and contemplative, as well as dark and dramatic, framing an enjoyable and rhythmic affirmation of life. The piece was premiered on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 by the Holcomb High School band, Jim Krohn conducting, with Travis Keller as the euphonium soloist. I had the distinct honor of sitting in Tanner's chair and playing euphonium with the band at the premiere.It was just around a year earlier that Tanner had started attending the church in Garden City where I was choir director in 2009. I was introduced to him and remember a kind face. It was a surreal experience when I was reminded of that introduction after the premiere.You never know where life will take you and how our lives can be intertwined with the lives of others without even being aware of it. It was a wonderful reminder to me that with just a simple twist of fate, the smallest of moments can lead to some of the most powerful moments in our lives.

We are always looking for places to go together, as well as excuses to include each other in our own individual travels. One of my personal favorite travel opportunities is the International Double Reed Society conference. It is an opportunity to catch up with friends, make new friends and contacts, and make beautiful music. A number of years ago, I started the All Star Double Reed Band that has now premiered over a dozen new pieces for large double reed ensemble, and has recorded an album of those works. As a combined labor of love, I wrote Impressions of Yellowstone for my wife, a concert pianist, to perform with this group.The first movement, “Little Grand Canyon opens with a chorale in the piano illustrating the simple majesty of the great and wondrous park that my wife and I visit annually with her parents. From there, the music exemplifies my impression of this wondrous landscape; beautiful, powerful. A deep valley with a waterfall on one end, it is one of the more beautiful sites to see in Yellowstone.The second movement, Grand Prismatic, is a musical impression of the different perspectives of this very famous Yellowstone landmark. From the overlook, you see a stunning pond with steam emanating from it and surrounded by color. However, if you are to go down and stand next to the hotspot, your perspective changes greatly. Sulfur smells, danger from the soft crust (with boiling sulfuric liquid just below the surface), and a hot, steamy fog of mist permeate the area.In the finale, Old Faithful, tone painting is brought out in full force as the opening piano solo material brings about the image of the geyser bubbling and building below the surface. Then, at the point of explosion, you hear the water falling and the delight of all of the dozens of onlookers who visit this most famous site at Yellowstone every day.The original version, for double reeds, is dedicated the All Star Double Reed Band and my wife, Tammy Miller, who recorded it on the Co-Op Press label.The version for piano and string orchestra is dedicated to Tammy and the National Composers Orchestra who recorded it on the Baldwin Records label.

I keep updated on all things astronomical. Though I likely won't live to see it, I greatly look forward to mankind's inevitable exploration of deep space and other galaxies. An aphelion is defined as the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is furthest from the sun. This phenomenon was the inspiration for this concert piece for two horns and string orchestra (or piano). The work begins starkly, with just the horns playing by themselves before a single string drone enters. This is the light of the sun a long ways away. The piece then takes us on a few adventures as it begins its revolution around the sun. The piece ends warmly as we arrive at perihelion (the point in the orbit of a planet, asteroid, or comet at which it is closest to the sun). Aphelion for two horns and string orchestra was commissioned by and is gratefully dedicated to the Chech American Horn Duo (Steven Gross and Jiri Havlik) and the Symphony of the Vines, Greg Magie, conductor, who premiered the piece in January of 2018.

This quartet in four movements is a music depiction of this philosophical idea long since rejected by modern science.Of Wind and Wings begins with rapid-fire rhythmic chord progressions that lead into a kaleidoscope of colors. Each part is featured at some point. Of Wind and Wings portrays the beauty of what it must be like to soar across the skies and feel the wind beneath your wings.Within the Flame is a soulful representation of the fire element. After an opening chorale depicting a look into a small, calm flame, the movement takes off with the flames reaching ever higher and higher. The movement ends as it began, with a calm, soulful chorale.In the Waters Shimmering looks directly into the shimmering reflection of the sunlight in water. A beautiful lyrical theme is passed around the quartet surrounded by various chorales and duets. One last lovely chorale moment brings the movement to its conclusion.To the Land Beyond, a depiction of the earth element, is full of sparking flourishes and rhythmic interest. This movement is a joyous celebration of nature, life, and all its beauty.Originally written as four individual pieces, but always intended to be a set, The Elements can be performed as individual movements or can be performed as a full four movement presentation.

The technique of intarsia inlays sections of wood (at times with contrasting ivory or bone, or mother-of-pearl) within the solid stone matrix of floors and walls or of table tops and other furniture; by contrast marquetry assembles a pattern out of veneers glued upon the carcass. It is also a knitting technique used to create patterns with multiple colors.This beautiful snapshot weaves its melodic lines in and out of the this interesting, but surprisingly effect texture. This piece marked the beginning of a tradition in my family. To mark their senior years, I compose a piece for each of my children. This piece is open to whatever they wish and thus,my oldest (to whom this piece is lovingly dedicated), decided she wanted to play a piece with a couple of her friends.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.CBW209-S). 9 x 12 in inches.In the fall of 2013, I was approached by Tyler Goodrich White of the Lincoln Symphony who had heard of my interest in composing a holiday piece featuring the surrounding area's Suzuki students, and he gave me the green light with just a couple of stipulations: one, it had to feature the tunes from the Suzuki book, and also needed to be presented in the same order and in the same keys; and two, it needed to be interesting for the audience and the orchestra.The piece began with those sketches of Suzuki tunes. Interspersed were my original orchestral interludes, what I intended to be a combination of beautiful, dramatic, and playful, with hints of recognizable Christmas tunes woven into the background. Festive Expressions was the resulting composition, which can be performed with or without Suzuki Soloists. It was premiered by Lincoln's Symphony Orchestra on December 7, 2013 with Tyler Goodrich White conducting over 100 Suzuki Soloists on stage.The Wind Ensemble arrangement, Satana Autumn, was created for Fred J. Allen and the Stephen F. Austin State University Wind Ensemble; it was intended as a gift in response to a wonderful piece he wrote for me when I was a public school teacher.
