Organ - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.549915 Composed by James M. Guthrie. Contemporary,Instructional. Score. 3 pages. Jmsgu3 #3911787. Published by jmsgu3 (A0.549915). In Nomine: A prelude to the St Luke Organ Book (by Daniel Pinkham) for one single organ manual. Subtitled The Little Time Machine, the composition features one iteration of the In Nomine cantus firmus. As the piece progresses, the cantus is treated in medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, classical, romantic, and modern styles. I performed this piece just before the world premiere of Daniel Pinkham's St. Luke Organ Book in 2006.The history of In Nomine is rooted in its origin as a type of contrapuntal instrumental composition by 16th-century English composers, usually for a consort of viols, lute, or keyboard, based on a version of a piece of plainchant. The name In Nomine was adopted for this type of piece after the English composer John Taverner composed an instrumental piece based on the plainchant Gloria Tibi Trinitas to which he set the words In nomine Domini in his Gloria Tibi Trinitas six-voice Mass. Over the next 150 years, English composers worked this melody into In Nomine pieces of ever more fantastic stylistic range. This set a fashion, and several 20th-century composers, such as Peter Maxwell Davies and Roger Smalley, have quoted In Nomines in their works. The In Nomine played a significant role in developing English polyphony. It is a title given to many pieces of English polyphonic, predominantly instrumental music, first composed during the 16th century. The In Nomine was the chief means by which the grand tradition of vocal polyphony was brought to bear on the evolution of instrumental music in England. The In Nomine is considered the most conspicuous single form in the early development of English consort music and is significant in the genesis of chamber music in England. It marked the first time a specific instrumental style was formed, and it influenced the development of English polyphony by bringing the tradition of vocal polyphony into the realm of instrumental music.Despite various attempts by scholars to elucidate its almost legendary origin, the mystery of the origin of the In Nomine remains unsolved.

Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1357134 Composed by Johannes Brahms. Arranged by Nejc BeÄan. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,Romantic Period. 188 pages. UpBeat Editions #941763. Published by UpBeat Editions (A0.1357134). The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. Today the wind ensemble piece remains without clear attribution.A transcription faithful to the original for Concert band.Full set of Score and parts.Further info:www.upbeateditions.comupbeat.editions@gmail.comhttps://www.facebook.com/UpBeatEditions.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1463555 By Sonny Rollins. By Sonny Rollins. Arranged by Will Corbin. Jazz. 21 pages. Will Corbin #1042294. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1463555). A saxophonist was playing this catchy song outside New Orleans' Cafe du Monde one morning when I was visiting. When I figured out what the tune was, I was driven to arrange it for our quintet. The result is at least good for one illustration: If you thought you needed drums for calypso or Latin, think again. Horns work pretty well.Jazz tenor sax great Sonny Rollins wrote this, mostly as a vehicle for improvisation. It's based on a Bahamian folk melody called Sponger Money, which may or may not be based on a British folk song called The Lincolnshire Poacher. Whatever the case, it's a variation on a song Rollins' mother sang to him when he was a child in the Virgin Islands. This arrangement -- not as easy to play as it looks, because of the rhythms -- is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. It's also perfect for the improv-impaired -- but can also serve as a framework for players who are good at it.If you need alternative instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Saxophone quartet Alto Saxophone,Baritone Saxophone,Soprano Saxophone,Tenor Saxophone - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.764653 Composed by Gustav Holst (1874-1934). Arranged by James Pybus. 20th Century,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. 97 pages. James Pybus #36481. Published by James Pybus (A0.764653). In 1905 Gustav Holst became Director of Music at St. Paul’s Girls’ School in Hammersmith, London, a post which he retained right up until his death in 1934. St. Paul's Suite was written for the school’s string orchestra in 1912. The work is in four movements: a Jig, reminiscent of English fiddle tunes; a muted Ostinato (Presto); an Intermezzo which starts fairly slowly and softly, switching abruptly to a short Vivace section. The rhythmic tune here is based on an Arab song which Holst had noted in his sketchbook a few years earlier while on holiday in Algeria. After this brief interlude, the music returns to the slower opening tempo, and in the very last bars of the movement ‘the descending chromatic sixths are like a gesture of farewell to the good old days: never again did [Holst] indulge in such an unblushing display of nineteenth-century romanticism’--- these rather severe words are his daughter’s, quoted from her biography of her father. The Finale is framed around a familiar English folk tune (the Dargason), which, in the course of the movement, is used as a counter-melody to the even more familiar Greensleeves. Holst was evidently fond of this tune, as he also used it as the concluding movement of his well-known Suite No. 2 in F, Op. 28b for Military Band. Durations: 1. Jig 4:00; 2. Ostinato 1:28; 3. Intermezzo 3:41; 4. Finale (The Dargason) 4:00; Total time 13:09 I wrote this arrangement for SATB Saxophone Quartet in 2004, with revisions in 2015. It is a challenging yet ultimately rewarding piece for both audiences and players. contact me at james.pybus56@gmail.com.
