Winter Wonderland is a song written in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith. Though not originally intended as a Christmas song, its winter theme has made it a holiday favorite in the Northern Hemisphere. First recorded by Richard Himber, the song has since been covered by over 200 artists. The lyrics depict a romantic scene between a couple enjoying the winter season. In 1947, a version with new children's lyrics was released, transforming the song from a romantic winter scene to one focused on playful activities in the snow. The snowman, originally referred to as Parson Brown, was changed to a circus clown, and the romantic promises made by the couple were replaced with lyrics about frolicking. Some artists, like Johnny Mathis, blended both versions by adding additional verses and choruses.

The Great Rock Island Route, popularized as Wabash Cannonball and various other titles, is a 19th-century American folk song that describes the scenic beauty and predicaments of a fictional train, the Wabash Cannonball Express, as it traveled on the Great Rock Island Railroad. The song has become a country music staple and common marching band repertoire. The only train to actually bear the name was created in response to the song's popularity, the Wabash Railroad renaming its daytime express service between Detroit and St. Louis the Wabash Cannon Ball from 1949 until discontinuation during the formation of Amtrak in 1971.

The Carter Family made one of the first recordings of the song in 1929, though it was not released until 1932. Another popular version was recorded by Roy Acuff in 1936. The Acuff version is one of the fewer than 40 all-time singles to have sold 10 million (or more) physical copies worldwide.

The tune is most famously associated with Kansas State University athletics and ESPN in 2016 named it the top Big Twelve football pregame ritual. It is also a signature song of the Indiana State University Marching Sycamores and the Purdue All-American Marching Band as the ISU and Purdue campuses are adjacent to the Mighty Wabash River. It is also associated with the Stephen F. Austin State University Lumberjack Marching Band, the Kansas State University Marching Band, the Texas Tech University Goin' Band from Raiderland, and the University of Texas Longhorn Band. It was also used as the theme song by USS Wabash.

The song The Wabash Cannonball is part of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list. It is the oldest song on the list.

Pachelbel's Canon (also known as the Canon in D, P 37) is an accompanied canon by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel. The canon was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue, known as Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo. Both movements are in the key of D major. Although a true canon at the unison in three parts, it also has elements of a chaconne. Neither the date nor the circumstances of its composition are known (suggested dates range from 1680 to 1706), and the oldest surviving manuscript copy of the piece dates from 1838 to 1842.[1]

Like his other works, Pachelbel's Canon went out of style, and remained in obscurity for centuries. A 1968 arrangement and recording of it by the Jean-François Paillard chamber orchestra gained popularity over the next decade, and in the 1970s the piece began to be recorded by many ensembles; by the early 1980s its presence as background music was deemed inescapable.[2] From the 1970s onward, elements of the piece, especially its chord progression, were used in a variety of pop songs. Since the 1980s, it has also found increasingly common use in weddings and funeral ceremonies in the Western world.

Ellens dritter Gesang (Ellen's Song III, D. 839, Op. 52, No. 6, 1825), known in English as Ellen's Third Song, was composed by Franz Schubert in 1825. It is part of his Op. 52, a collection of seven songs inspired by Walter Scott's 1810 narrative poem The Lady of the Lake, which was loosely translated into German.

This piece is among Schubert's most beloved works. Although it was originally composed as a song, it is frequently performed and recorded under the title Ave Maria. This title references the Latin name of the prayer Hail Mary, which is also the opening phrase and refrain of Ellen's song—a prayer to the Virgin Mary. Performances often feature simplified musical arrangements and various lyrics that deviate from the original poem. Franz Liszt arranged the piece in three versions for piano.

Schubert's composition is based on verse XXIX from Canto Three of Scott's poem, translated into German by Adam Storck (1780–1822). It is part of Schubert's Liederzyklus vom Fräulein vom See. In Scott's narrative, Ellen Douglas, the Lady of the Lake (Loch Katrine in the Scottish Highlands), seeks refuge with her exiled father in the Goblin's Cave, avoiding their previous host, Roderick Dhu, who has chosen to rebel against King James. As Roderick Dhu and his warriors ascend the mountain, he hears Ellen, accompanied by the harpist Allan-bane, singing a prayer to the Virgin Mary, pleading for help. Roderick Dhu pauses momentarily before heading into battle.

The song is said to have been first performed at the castle of Countess Sophie Weissenwolff in Steyregg, Austria, and was dedicated to her, earning her the nickname the lady of the lake.

The repeated use of Ave Maria in Ellen's song likely inspired the adaptation of Schubert's melody to fit the full text of the traditional Roman Catholic prayer Ave Maria. This adaptation has become so widespread that it often leads to the mistaken belief that Schubert originally composed the melody specifically for the Ave Maria prayer.

Monarch’s Flight tells a story about a monarch butterfly’s migration journey from the United States to Mexico. The melody is lively but soft. The song is supposed to be a little messy as the monarch joins his flock of butterflies. Listen for the call and response between the woodwinds and trumpet and echoes from the saxophones and French horns as the butterfly joins his friends. At the end the tempo slows and the butterfly rests safely in Mexico.

Dueling Banjos is a bluegrass composition by Arthur Guitar Boogie Smith. The song was composed in 1954 by Smith as a banjo instrumental he called Feudin' Banjos; it contained riffs from Smith, recorded in 1955 playing a four-string plectrum banjo and accompanied by five-string bluegrass banjo player Don Reno. The composition's first wide-scale airing was on a 1963 television episode of The Andy Griffith Show called Briscoe Declares for Aunt Bee, in which it is played by visiting musical family the Darlings (portrayed by The Dillards, a bluegrass group), along with Griffith himself.

The song was made famous by the 1972 film Deliverance, which also led to a successful lawsuit by the song's composer, as it was used in the film without Smith's permission. The film version was arranged and recorded by Eric Weissberg and Steve Mandell, but only credited to Weissberg on a single subsequently issued in December 1972. It went to second place for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1973, behind Roberta Flack's Killing Me Softly with His Song; it topped the adult contemporary chart for two weeks. It reached No. 1 for one week on both the Cashbox and Record World charts. It reached No. 5 on Hot Country Singles. It was nominated for the 30th Golden Globe Awards as Best Original Song. The success of the single led to an album of the same name released in January 1973.

This instrumental makes use of the quoting of the first 12 notes of Yankee Doodle.
