Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459173). Mexican songwriter Consuelo Velazquez wrote Besame Mucho, words and music, in 1941. When she died in 2005, The New York Times said this of the song in her obituary: 'Bésame Mucho' is not so much an enduring standard as a global phenomenon. Translated into dozens of languages and performed by hundreds of artists, the song has been an emblem of Latin identity, an anthem of lovers separated by World War II and perennial grist for lounge singers everywhere. Virtually every professional recording musician has covered it, from the Beatles to Placido Domingo. This arrangement borrows its 6/4 time signature (and not much more) from the 2001 recording by Maynard Ferguson and Diane Schuur. Sammy Nestico did a terrific arrangement for big band.It was even sung by an American Idol contestant. She lost. This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. This song is from the 1927 Broadway musical Showboat, music by Jerome Kern and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein (before his more celebrated partnership with Richard Rodgers). It was most famously performed by Paul Robeson in a 1931 film version of the play, (It was remade in 1951 with Ava Gardner playing a mulatta singer in a part that would have gone to Lena Horne had the producers not feared the wrath of Southern moviegoers.) The story includes exposition of the plight of African-Americans in the South of the Gilded Age; as a result, its content (including the lyrics of this song) were altered to accommodate racist audiences.
