I was commissioned to write this arrangement for band from a piano piece discovered in an antique store by Mitch Sturman, director of the Woodrow Wilson Junior High School Band in El Centro, California. Given the title of the piece, and the fact that Mr. Sturman was the band director at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School, he was immediately drawn to the piece.  He researched the work and could only find an identical copy at the Library of Congress.  No version for band was found, even after checking with the Marine Corps Band, The President's Own, which had performed at the Inauguration.  This band arrangement received its premiere by The Wilson Junior High School Band on May 25, 2016, at the Jimmie Cannon Performing Arts Theatre, El Centro, CA, with the arranger conducting. .

The Sidewalks of New York was written as a popular song in 1894 by vaudeville singer Charles B. Lawlor and James W. Blake. The song has since been covered in a variety of styles and settings.   Our version presents this classic in almost its original form, as a traditional waltz. Your audience will picture romantic couples, long bustled dresses, and spinning parasols as they hear this piece.   The melody is generously spread between the top four parts. Arranged for brass quintet (two Bb trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba). Performance time is approximately 1:10. A difficult arrangement with many eighth notes in the accompaniment. The tune comes from an 1878 organ piece and, despite the many eighth notes, is a rather calm, worshipful piece. It requires advanced ringers for the accompaniment.
Uses about  7 ringers. And, as you listen to the Wayside Chapel, you may even hear a favorite hymn through the open chapel door.

Gerda Blok-Wilson’s new composition of Emily Dickinson’s “There Came a Wind Like a Bugle� is a lively setting for SA voices with piano accompaniment. It portrays the arrival of a powerful wind and tells of its effects on the surroundings and impending disaster it brings. The piece has an ominous, almost supernatural sense that is driving to the end.

Although the choral or duet piece would work at any time of year, it could set the tone for a Halloween concert, adding an eerie atmosphere and sense of mystery.

Gerda Blok-Wilson, a Canadian composer, conductor, and educator, is a fervent advocate for the transformative power of choral singing and its remarkable ability to inspire people with diverse abilities. Her motto reflects that belief: If you can talk, you can sing! Since 2018, Gerda has dedicated herself to compiling and editing her compositions for publication. Her portfolio ranges from musicals and choral works tailored to nurture budding choirs to advanced choral repertoire that has garnered acclaim through live performances and recordings. Gerda is artist in residence at St. Patrick’s Regional High School in Vancouver and serves as the artistic director for the Vancouver Cansing Community Choir, which she founded in 2010. She is a frequent guest rehearsal conductor, helping local choirs polish their performances. Gerda's educational background includes a Bachelor of Music, a Kodály Teaching certificate, and a Master of Education with a focus on Kodály pedagogy.
