Brass Ensemble Trombone - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.783976 Composed by Billy Strayhorn. Arranged by John Skillman. Jazz,Standards. Score and parts. 13 pages. John Curtis Music #390426. Published by John Curtis Music (A0.783976). Originally completed in 1936, Lush Life has slowly gained traction as a gem in the jazz canon. For unknown reasons, Duke Ellington chose not to feature the song until 1948, in a piano/vocal duet live. It was never featured in a commercial recording by the full band. Thankfully, over time more artists picked up the torch of Lush Life--Nat King Cole, trumpeter Harry James, Carmen McRae, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Stan Getz and a few others. John Coltrane, on a 1958 record date with vocalist Johnny Hartman, reigns supreme in terms of quintessential performances of the song. This trombone choir arrangement (5 tenor + 1 bass) uses a more range-friendly key of A-flat, rather than the original D-flat, but keeps the harmony intact. Some rubato is encouraged so as to make the most of this expressive and harmonically complex, sad and beautiful song. #trombonechoir #billystrayhorn #basstrombone #ballads #johncurtismusic.com.

Concert Band - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1408939 By Duke Ellington. By Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington, and Johnny Mercer. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Film/TV,Jazz,Standards. 43 pages. John Ivor Holland #991543. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1408939). Satin Doll is a jazz standard written by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn with lyrics by Johnny Mercer. Written in 1953, the song has been recorded by many artists, incluing Ella Fitzgerald, 101 Strings, Dewey Redman, Chicago and Nancy Wilson. Johnny Mercer was often asked to write lyrics to already popular songs; the yrics to Satin Doll were written after the song was a hit in its instrumental version. This arrangement has been adapted from the jazz ensemble version by John Edmondson, retaining a short trumpet solo and incorporating the piano parts into the clarinets and vibraphone. Ellington used Satin Doll as the closing number in most of his concerts, why not pay tribute to The Duke and do the same at your next event?

Arranged by Chris Gorman. Jazz. Brass Band. 25 pages. Chris Gorman #690527. Published by Chris Gorman (A0.1086327). In August 1956, Duke Ellington and his orchestra were in Canada, performing in the same city as the ongoing Stratford Shakespearean Festival. Curious, Ellington and his longtime composer/arranger Billy Strayhorn talked to festival staffers, and Ellington soon announced his next album project would be a conceptual piece, paying tribute to Shakespeare's varied works with appropriate jazz compositions. In addition to the Such Sweet Thunder album, he promised the entire suite would be performed at the 1957 edition of the festival. Ellington and Strayhorn began building a home library of Shakespeare, seeking out Shakespeare experts, and reading through the canon during orchestra downtime. The title comes from Act IV scene i of A Midsummer Night's Dream, where Hippolyta says: I never heard / So musical a discord, such sweet thunder. The suite that would constitute Such Sweet Thunder was written in just under three weeks and recorded in early 1957. Although most of the compositions were created for the suite in conjunction with Strayhorn, a few were versions of older Strayhorn songs that were reworked and re-titled for the collection.

Handbell,Instrumental Solo - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1196883 By Duke Ellington. By Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. Arranged by Paul W. Allen. Historic,Instructional,Jazz,Standards. Individual part. 12 pages. Allen/Myer Musicals #796040. Published by Allen/Myer Musicals (A0.1196883). This originally orchestral vocal standard was made popular by Duke Ellington and collaborators Billy Strayhorn, Adelaide Hall (who, while offstage, hummed an obligato while the band played the selection on-stage), and ostensibly Cab Calloway.  Research into the development of this tune is confused.  Both Calloway's and Hall's lyrics can be found, but there is no information where the words go.  In most recordings the singer, if present, lyricizes syllables rather than words.  In any case, this handbell arrangement catches the spirit of the standard, which was rife with instrumental improvizatiolns; some improvization is scored here.  The price listed allows you ten (10) copies of the handbell score.

Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 19th Century,20th Century,Classical,Jazz,Standards. 46 pages. John Ivor Holland #1073127. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1496605). Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy) is from Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's album 'The Nutcracker Suite' (1960), reinterpreting the music of Tchaikovsky's classic Christmas ballet from 1892 and giving it a jazz twist. This arrangement for concert band is faithful to the original recording and score as much as possible and is suitable for more advanced bands, with important solos from key members of the ensemble. Bass and drums are key to give this the authentic style and audiences you and old are sure to love it, getting in the mood for the holidays! Also available separately:Complete Suite:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602555/Product.aspxPeanut Brittle Brigade:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602903/Product.aspxDance of the Floreadores:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602867/Product.aspx.

Concert Band - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1496270 Composed by Billy Strayhorn and Duke Ellington. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Classical,Jazz,Standards. 532 pages. John Ivor Holland #1072809. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1496270). The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. An excellent choice for Christmas, of course, but could come out at any time of year. Also available separately:Peanut Brittle Brigade:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602903/Product.aspxSugar Rum Cherry:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602888/Product.aspxDance of the Floreadores:https://www.sheetmusicdirect.com/en-US/se/ID_No/1602867/Product.aspx.
