Jules Ã‰mile FrÃ©dÃ©ric Massenet (May 12, 1842 â€“ August 13, 1912) was a French composer best known for his operas. His compositions were very popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and he ranks as one of the greatest melodists of his era. ThaÃ¯s is a three-act opera with a French libretto by Louis Gallet based on the novel ThaÃ¯s by Anatole France. Its famous MÃ©ditation, the entr'acte for violin and orchestra played between the scenes of Act II, is an oft-performed concert music piece; it has been arranged for many different instruments. In the present arrangement written in 2012, the original key of D major has been changed to Db to make it more suitable for the saxophone range. The soprano saxophone is the featured voice. One of the most famous moments from the opera Thaïs is the Méditation, an instrumental intermezzo for solo violin and orchestra. The Méditation is performed between scenes in Act II, during a pivotal moment in the narrative when Thaïs begins to contemplate her spiritual transformation. It is a lyrical and introspective piece that symbolizes Thaïs' inner turmoil and her journey towards redemption. The serene, meditative quality of the music contrasts with the intensity of the surrounding drama, making it one of the most beloved and frequently performed works for violin.

The sublime melody played on the piano with the damper pedal has an evocative charm that is not matched by any other instrument on their own. It is one of the most endearing melodies in the romantic repertoire. And it is not too difficult technically.
