Published in 1901, It is considered to be one of Joplin’s finest and most adventurous works. Indeed the complex harmony made the first publisher so nervous that he only released a simplified version. The Easy Winners refers to elite athletes who featured on the original title page.  This arrangement of The Easy Winners is arranged as a duet for two Trumpets. Musicians at an intermediate level and above will find this ideal for formal and informal performances. The overall performance time, with repeats, is between four and five minutes. This arrangement of Scarborough Fair, a well-known English folksong, is the first in my Folksong Echoes’ Series, which attempts to re-imagine traditional folksongs in a more fragmented, but still beautiful way. I use the term ‘fragmented’ because it is essentially the main approach to these arrangements. You will hear glimpses of the tune in the form of melodic motifs, clusters, and sustained resonances, which are beautifully imagined through the sustain pedal of the piano. Overall, these fragments make up ‘echoes’ which allude to the concept of something being there but also not quite being there, a bit like the pieces that make up a jigsaw puzzle.Duration: approximately 3’20’’Composition year: 2021
