These short Buddhist anthems (ranging from about 45 seconds to 1 1/2 minutes duration) are choral settings of poems (wasan) by the great Jodo Shinshu Buddhist luminary, Shinran Shonin (Japan, 1173-1262). Each one celebrates the aspects of the miraculous saving Light of the Buddhist Savior, Amida Buddha. The MP3 Audio Clip is a computer-generated soundfile of the concluding anthem (no. 13). Total duration of the series, about 14 minutes. The style of the music is completely tonal with conventional rhythms, suitable for performance by amateur groups or professional choirs alike.

When I first wrote this song, the idea behind it was a quiet winter evening with big fluffy snow flakes falling from they sky. I know many don't like snow, but I always find magic in it. The silence it brings and the beauty of it blanketing everything in sparkling white will never get old. Searching for a title for this piece led me to the word 'shinshin.' This Indie-Rock song by The Shins from their 2001 album Oh, Inverted World was a special request - one of many - by a bride & groom for their wedding. My first reaction was one of doubt as I pondered how I could make this divergent sound work for a String Trio. The more I listened, I heard the haunting melody, and the lyrics speaking of internal struggles and the need for introspection. Yes, caring can be very unsettling and at times even frightening. Relationships are complex. You have to invest emotionally. (...kind of like I had to do to pen this compostion for strings.) The arrangement is simple and straight-forward, but it works. After all, we often have to find comfort in unconventional choices. As the lyrics tell us: ...never got cold wearing nothing in the snow..
