“O xote das Meninas� is a xote by Luiz Gonzaga and Zé Dantas, originally recorded on February 5, 1953, becoming one of the most popular pieces in their repertoire. Gonzaga re-recorded it six years later, for his LP “Meus Sucessos com Zé Dantas� and an instrumental version, in 1972, for the LP “São-João Quente�. According to Zé Dantas: His verses begin by singing the mandacaru, a cactus that does not depend on the rain to bloom, a phenomenon that, when it happens in the dry season, makes the caboclo believe that the thunderstorm is approaching. This superstition led us to establish a simile between the mandacaru flower, a prodromal sign of the rain that arrives giving the earth fecundity, and the girl who, getting sick of the doll, becomes a woman.

A lovely set of variations on the Austrian folk song 'Cousin Michael was there last night'. Originally for csakan or 'romantic recorder' (tuned to G) and guitar, this arrangement, for soprano recorder and piano, offers the recorder part in the original printed key of G - so we play almost exactly the same fingering as the csakan. The guitar part, however, originally written out in the sounding key of C, has been arranged for piano and transposed to G. The piano part keeps as closley as possible to the simple unobtrusiveness of the guitar, with minimal filling out, mainly in the right hand. Metronome markings are ediorial. Slurs, dynamics, etc. are as in the original (where I have added simile, it is to be understood that the slurring of the  preceding bars is to be followed all through). Nothing is known of the composer. The piece was published in Vienna in 1815.

This vocal arrangement is quite similar to the original song, rather than a choral arrangement you'll find a rhythmic approach.

I only used two phrases of the original three ones, with the beautiful refrain with an harmonic movement at bars 38 and 39.

In the ending I took some liberties, there isn't the powerful à la Caruso ending. Instead, after the closing there is a little more complex and dramatic harmonic part.

Your attention please: I wrote two arrangements: a richer SATTBB and a simpler SATB; soprano and contralto between the two are different, it is not enough to remove the second tenor and the baritone from SATTBB to obtain SATB.

Ho usato solo due frasi delle tre originali con il bellissimo ritornello che si movimenta armonicamente alle battute 38 e 39.
Nel finale mi son lasciato andare, non c'è il finale potente alla Caruso ma dopo la chiusura c'è una parte armonica un po' più complessa e drammatica ma che termina in modo scherzoso.

Attenzione: ho scritto due arrangiamenti: SATTBB più ricco e SATB più semplice; le parti di soprano e contralto tra i due sono diverse, non basta levare il secondo tenore e il baritono da SATTBB per ottenere SATB se no non suona bene.

(Ps 91:4) Does He travel on the back of a cherub? (Psalm 18:10) Are the clouds a hiding place for God? (Job 22:14) Is His residence a place called heaven? Is the earth the footstool of His throne? ♫ The poetry of the Bible, (like other ancient literature) is full of figures of speech. Figures of speech explain things in words and ideas we can understand. The Bible abounds in figures of speech such as simile (comparison using like or as), metaphor (comparison not using like or as), synecdoche (using a part for the whole), deliberate hyperbole [obvious exaggeration], verbal irony (the tone of voice tells that the speaker means the opposite of the words he or she is using), personification (attributing human features or feelings to animals or inanimate objects), anthropomorphism / anthropopathism (gives human attributes, feelings to God.) [or animals, inanimate objects, cartoon characters.]
♫ God is spirit. (John 1:18, John 4:24) He is infinite, eternal, invisible, undetectable. The humanlike descriptions of God are actually figures of speech that help us understand and identify with Him. Descriptions of God’s eyes, arms, feet, wings, etc. are all figures of speech that tell us God is present everywhere, sees everything, hears everything, and cares about every part of his creation. (God is imminent).
♫ The heavens, even the highest heavens cannot contain Him. (2 Chronicles 2:6, 6:18) God is separate from the universe. (God is transcendent.) Scientific measurements cannot detect Him because He is not in the universe, the universe is in Him.
♫ Just as you can feel your fingers and your toes at the same time, God knows what is happening in every atom of the universe simultaneously. Back to the original question.
