The old French chant tune, Adoro devote, often set to the communion text Humbly I adore thee, is presented three times in this piano setting, moving freely among the voices.  Each section is introduced by an open-fifths motif, which also ends the piece.  At a mostly subdued dynamic level, it is appropriate for communion, prelude, or other reflective juncture in a worship service.  One of three communion tune settings, see Meditations on Gibbons’s Song 4 and on St. Keverne.

This three-part presentation of Craig Sellar Lang’s communion tune, St. Keverne, used for the text From glory to glory advancing, begins with hollow fifths reminiscent of the Agincourt hymn.  The tune, rhythmically altered slightly, appears in the right hand throughout the first two repetitions, the second accompanied by counterpoint.  The third presentation of the tune shifts to the left hand for its first half, building to a climax using the alternative melody for the ending provided in many hymnbooks.  One of three communion tune settings, see Meditations on Adoro devote and Gibbons’s Song 4.

Abraham’s Walk is a reflection, for viola and piano, of the dramatic biblical story of God calling on Abraham to demonstrate his faith by sacrificing his son, Isaac. The beginning sets a peaceful mood with a quiet modal tune, first in piano and then viola, but somber chords intervene.  Then God calls to Abraham three times, each time louder, the last time thunderously.  After a pause, the viola captures Abraham’s stunned and then agitated response, as he processes what he’s being asked to do.  Tragically resolved, he begins the trudging walk to his son’s doom, which builds to a climax in both instruments, culminating in God’s calling again to Abraham, this time to stay his knife hand.

Cascading runs in the right hand, and sometimes both hands, accompany the outer two presentations of Gibbons’s haunting tune, often used for the communion text, Completed, Lord, the Holy Mysteries.  The middle section shifts the tune to right hand chords (with brief echoes of the Dies irae interpolated), while the left continues the energy driving the piece forward.  The cascades die away in the coda.  One of three communion tune settings, see Meditations on Adoro devote and on St. Keverne.
