By Howard Goodall. By Howard Goodall. Arranged by Warren J. Wernick. Contemporary. Score and parts. 7 pages. Warren J Wernick #5713803. Published by Warren J Wernick (A0.948762).

Blackadder is a series of four BBC One pseudohistorical British sitcoms, plus several one-off installments, which originally aired from 1983–1989. All television episodes starred Rowan Atkinson as the antihero Edmund Blackadder and Tony Robinson as Blackadder's dogsbody, Baldrick. Each series was set in a different historical period, with the two protagonists accompanied by different characters, though several reappear in one series or another, e.g., Melchett (Stephen Fry) and Lord Flashheart (Rik Mayall). The theme song is composed by Howard Goodall, an English composer of musicals, choral music and music for television. He also presents music-based programs for television and radio, for which he has won many awards. In May 2008, he was named as a presenter and Composer-in-Residence with the UK radio channel Classic FM. In May 2009, he was named Composer of the Year at the Classic BRIT Awards. Goodall said of the Theme, They asked me if I would have a go at the tune. With all of these things, although I do come up with my own ideas, you don't really come up with a good one unless you talk it through with them and the vision they've got. It was quite obvious, the historical approach they were going for. What's interesting is that the first series, the medieval one with 'Richard the Fourth', was much more filmic and much more historical. That's why we ended up with that tune. Whereas had the first series been the Elizabethan one, the theme would have been slightly gentler, less heroic. .

THE VICAR OF DIBLEY (Howard Goodall) - 4 GUITARS/LARGE ENSEMBLE
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful setting of the 23rd Psalm (The Lord Is My Shepherd) by Howard Goodall is well-known in the UK and elsewhere as the Theme Tune to the gentle TV comedy The Vicar Of Dibley.

This arrangement is in 4 easy-to-intermediate parts and contains all the material of the original. Although the tune has several verses, the orchestration here gradually grows to mimic the original. The guitar, of course, cannot mimic the endless sustain of the pipe organ, so I have made the setting a little more guitar-like with arpeggios and with extra movement in the harmony lines, so that there is an illusion of much more sustain. A listen to the sound-file alongside the music for sale should show that the result is restful and fun to play.

Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the fingering are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...

I hope you enjoy performing this!

English.

Commissioned for the congregation and choir of St. Francis Church, Simon’s Town, South Africa, this beautiful choral work by Howard Goodall sets a moving text attributed to St. Francis of Assisi. Combining Goodall’s trademark lyricism with a striking trumpet countermelody and accessible organ accompaniment, Promises of grace exhibits all the features that Goodall’s music is so loved for. This work is an ideal choice for both professional and amateur choirs and is suitable for services and concerts.

B-flat Trumpet part is provided in the choral score.

VICAR OF DIBLEY (Psalm 23) - FLUTE and GUITAR
For Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.

Derek Hasted writes This delightful setting of the 23rd Psalm (The Lord Is My Shepherd) by Howard Goodall is well-known in the UK and elsewhere as the Theme Tune to the gentle TV comedy The Vicar Of Dibley.

My arrangement for flute and guitar is very accessible and straightforward, but still contains all the thematic material of the original. In a nod to the medieval sound that a choir conjures up when singing this modern setting, the guitar part is played with a Capo on the 3rd fret, to mimic the pitch range of the lute and to make the sound lighter and more ethereal. The flute part is played at pitch, so the full score is set in two keys - the capo does all the magic!

Dynamics are suggested that mirror the original (with choir, organ and full orchestra) but the guitar fingering and the flute breath points are yours to choose - just make sure you make the performance yours...

I hope you enjoy performing this!
