Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Ted R. Marcus. 19th Century,Classical,Contest,Festival,March,Romantic Period. Score and Parts. 109 pages. Ted R. Marcus #3088637. Published by Ted R. Marcus (A0.840481).

Camille Saint-Saëns was only 17 when he wrote his first published symphony. But he already had a mature mastery of orchestral writing, along with the courage to defy convention: A march takes the place of the normal triple-meter scherzo movement. It's an unconventional march that starts with an elegant melody, surveys a wide range of emotions, and dissipates into a quiet ending. It's really neither a march nor a scherzo, but something all its own.

This colorful concert band arrangement was written for an adult community band. It's appropriate for a college or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. It features two solo flutes, two solo clarinets, soprano saxophone, vibraphone, and marimba (the vibraphone part is cued to allow performance without the marimba). It also requires strong oboe and bassoon players. Extensive cues allow rehearsal and performance without oboes, bassoons, soprano saxophone, and/or mallet percussion.

Duration: approx. 5:00. The audio clip is a complete performance by the Peninsula Symphonic Winds.

Instrumentation: Flute 1A and 1B (two solo players) / Flute 2 / Oboe 1-2 / Clarinet 1A and 1B (two solo players) / Clarinet 2-3 / Alto Clarinet / Bass Clarinet / E-flat Contra-alto clarinet (optional alternate for string bass) / B-flat Contrabass Clarinet (optional alternate for string bass) / Bassoon 1-2 / Soprano Saxophone / Alto Saxophone / Tenor Saxophone / Baritone Saxophone / Trumpet 1-2-3 / Horn 1-2-3-4 / Trombone 1-2-3 / Euphonium / Baritone T.C. / String Bass / Vibes / Marimba (Vibes part has cues for performance without marimba)

Composed by Carson Cooman. Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 134 pages. Musik Fabrik Music Publishing #3037307. Published by Musik Fabrik Music Publishing (A0.533673).

Symphony No. 3, “Ave Maris Stella†(2005) was written for the Duquesne Contemporary
Ensemble and is dedicated to composer David Stock. Throughout his career, Stock has been
a tireless and generous advocate on behalf of new music and living composers. This work is
dedicated to him in tribute – as both an important American composer and a significant
contributor to America’s contemporary musical life.
The work’s basic source material is the plainchant Ave maris stella (“Hail, star of the seaâ€) –
appropriate because of Duquesne’s standing and history as a Catholic university. When the
composition of this work first began, the original plan was for a celebratory and vibrant piece.
As the planning progressed, however, personal circumstances intervened and began to change
the work’s tone – becoming substantially bleaker and more obsessive.
The title of the first movement, Pentimento, is defined as “an underlying image in a painting,
as an earlier painting, that shows through when the top layer of paint has become transparent
with age.†The melodic and harmonic material for the movement is entirely drawn from the
plainchant source, although it is completely transformed and covered up – as in a pentimento.
At various points, one can begin to hear the original plainchant “peek out†in subtle ways.
The opening section of the movement obsesses again and again on what sounds like a
“beginning†– as though it is trying to begin again and again. After a brief bassoon cadenza, a
fast and driving section starts, marked “sinister.†After driving through a series of
transformations on the plainchant material, a bridge passage leads to further attempts at the
“beginning†again. Finally, these attempts are given up, and the plainchant material (the
underlying layer) begins to show through quietly – in preparation for the next movement.
In the second movement, Interrupted Motet, the plainchant theme is used in a more
straightforward fashion. After the opening declamatory statements, the following sections
move between more free developmental techniques, based on the first movement’s
transformations, and “motet†sections – using cantus firmus methods and textures from
Renaissance music. The tone and palate is, however, much darker and more obsessive.
There is a brooding ponderousness to these contrapuntal developments. The final motet
section ends in a rageful shout, the plainchant material is presented again in full force, and the
pent-up energy dissipates to the close.

By Kumiko. By Joe Hisaishi. Arranged by Tom Maher. 21st Century,Classical,Film/TV. Score and Parts. 92 pages. Tom Maher #832309. Published by Tom Maher (A0.1236780).

Merry Go Round of Life is a beautiful instrumental piece composed by Joe Hisaishi, a Japanese composer known for his work on various Studio Ghibli films. The song is featured in the soundtrack of the 2004 animated film Howl's Moving Castle, directed by legendary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki.

The piece opens with a delicate piano melody, heard in our arrangement on the vibraphone, gradually building in intensity as the rest of the orchestra joins in. The music captures a sense of whimsy and nostalgia, evoking images of a carousel or a child's music box.

In Howl's Moving Castle, the song is used as a recurring theme throughout the film. It is played during several key moments, including the opening credits and the final scene. The music perfectly captures the film's themes of love, magic, and the passing of time.

The title Merry Go Round of Life is fitting, as it suggests the cyclical nature of life and the idea that we are all constantly moving in circles. The music also conveys a sense of hope and joy, encouraging listeners to embrace the ups and downs of life and enjoy the ride.

This arrangement is meant for intermediate to advanced high school symphonic orchestra. Most instruments play some version of the melody, and many of the figures from the original film version are present, yet written with younger players in mind. The strings should take extra care to play under the vibraphone solos, or the director may choose to double this part on another mallet percussion or piano.

Instrumentation: 2 Flutes, 2 Clarinets, Bass Clarinet, Alto Sax, 2 Horns, 3 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Mallet Percussion, Snare Drum/Crash Cymbal, Bass Drum, Timpani, Violin 1, Violin 2, Viola, Cello, Double Bass.
