This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. The song by French composer Michel Legrand, with English lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman (they wrote the words to dozens of hit songs), was the main theme of the 1968 Steve McQueen/Faye Dunaway flick The Thomas Crown Affair. It won that year's Oscar for best original song. The best-known version is Brit singer Dusty Springfield's haunting rendition for her 1969 album Dusty In Memphis.
This arrangement features french horn carrying the melody most of the way in a low register.

Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney sang this as a conversation duet in the 1941 film Babes On Broadway, one of their many screen collaborations. And it's the only song from the film you've ever heard of since. It pops up here and there in movies, and was most famously covered by Frank Sinatra.
The lyrics were a product of their times. The original featured the line, Franklin Roosevelt's looks give me a thrill. Sinatra substituted James Durante's looks. Neither works today.
This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba, picks up the original's conversation, passing it among the four higher horns.

This elegant ballad (at least, before I got my hands on it) is the love and closing theme from the wholly inelegant 1989 sports flick Major League (which I have to admit to watching more than once).  This is a trombone feature, demonstrating the idea that if a trombonist wants a really good part, the easiest route is to write it yourself.

TUBA ALERT! Most recorded versions of this Henry Mancini classic hand the melody to flutes and piccolos. But baby elephants don't piccolo, they tuba. (This from actual personal experience.) So the heavy melodic lifting in this arrangement goes there. The song was featured in the 1962 latter-day John Wayne adventure romance comedy Hatari, a film from which its theme song is the only thing worth remembering. The song won Mancini a 1963 Grammy for best instrumental song. A 1962 recording by Lawrence Welk (!) reached No. 48 on Billboard's Hot 100. It was as hot as Welk ever got.

Norman Wilcox has written a new work for Brass Quintet titled Mode Swings. It is in A-B-A format beginning with a lively, rhythmic melody in mixed meter which is passed around the group.  The B section features a lyrical Trombone solo and 2nd Trumpet.  The A section comes back to life and finishes off a most delightful work.

This work is written for advanced performers at about 4 1/2 minutes in length and will work very well in a recital or concert.
