For advanced intermediate performers, this is sheer fun from start to finish, and very suitable for Christmas concerts. This is a set of supplemental string quartet parts for the beautiful Austrian carol, arranged in slow Jazz ballad style, but not intended for stand alone performance. It is from a set of international carols commissioned by clarinetist Lydia Calhoun for her CD, Carols for the King from Around the World, released in 2015. For more advanced performers, this perennial favorite is suitable for Christmas concerts and church preludes or offertories; it can be taken at either a moderate or a slower tempo, and is around 5 minutes in length. Those musicians who purchased Volume Two of the clarinet collection, or the solo version for cello and piano may be interested in adding strings to their performances.  See also the full score for clarinet, string quartet and piano, and for cello, string quartet and piano. Bach and Pachelbel. Beginning with a cappella men's voices and solo trumpet, it builds to a triumphant final verse with the choir in unison. Suitable for church services and seasonal concerts, I have performed this very effectively with my choir positioned down the side aisles of the church, then processing up the center aisle during the final verse. This is a setting of two old hymn tunes, Retreat and Rockingham, originally arranged as a choral anthem with violin obbligato but here rearranged as a violin solo with piano. It is suitable as prelude or offertory music. The first tune, Retreat, is most commonly found in American hymnbooks for the hymn From Every Stormy Wind that Blows, hence the title, but in the United Kingdom mostly Communion hymns are sung to these melodies. Rockingham is often used as the tune for When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. If the title is to be printed in a church bulletin I recommend using whichever hymn is most familiar in the context as the title! The recording begins at the end of the introduction, in measure 8 - it was done at a youth camp as Chapel Prelude so there is some background noise. There is already a version for solo flute and other instrumentation will be offered eventually. The melody is also associated with the Easter carol, Now The Green Blade Riseth. The much loved hymn by Horatius Bonar to a tune by early English composer Thomas Tallis is set here for low voice with violin obbligato. The melody is familiar in its setting by Vaughan Williams as Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus. Of moderate difficulty, this would make a lovely prelude or offertory piece, and could also be used in concert settings. Two copies are required for performance.
