Requested by Gary Woolf for the Banda di Musica, this piece is a slightly simplified arrangement of my Septet’s slow 4th movement. The cello solo remains the same apart from the harmonics, which have been transferred as ordinary high notes to a solo violin. This will make the piece much more approachable for younger players.

There are two Arrangements; 

 School Arrangement –  Violins 1, 2 and 3 and Cellos 1 and 2. 

The cello solo is played by the lead cellist and is written on the Cello 1 part.

Standard Arrangement – Violins 1 and 2, Viola, Cello and Double Bass. Again, the cello solo is played by the lead cellist.

There are 4 arrangements available:

No.2 – Standard Arrangement – 2 solo violins, Violins 1 and 2, violas, cellos and double basses

No.3 – Piano reduction – for 2 solo violins and piano

No. 4 – Arrangement for Flute, violin and piano

 

The piece is light-hearted and tuneful and in simple ternary form. The outer sections are perky, playful and dance-like, and they frame a slow, luscious middle section where the soloists have some high harmonics.

I would guess that the orchestral players would need to be at about Grade 4/5 upwards to manage this comfortably.

The Pines Of Roselawn, Intermezzo for Solo Cello and Strings – October 2012.  Duration Approx. 12 minutes

This piece was written in memory of my father, Colum Denny, who passed away in May 2012.
It is slow, beautiful and very Romantic in character. Its middle section is more turbulent with an exciting mixture of intensity and soaring “flying music�.
While the orchestral parts are fairly straightforward, the cello solo part would suit a cellist of about grade 7 upwards.

This short piece was inspired by my many sightings and observations of sparrowhawks in their behaviour,  hunting techniques and how they fly and soar. They appear to “Tango� with their prey. For me the Tango is a passionately agressive dance with no negotiation. If you are a small creature caught by a sparrowhawk there is also no negotiation!

There are now 7 different arrangements of this piece available;

2009 – Examination in progress, for junior string orchestra. Commissioned by Gary Woolf. Duration: approx 4 minutes.

This short piece is comical in character and will have people smiling! It began life as a solo piano piece back in 1980 when I was at school and stressing over my first secondary school exams. Everywhere I looked in my school I was confronted with signs that read, “Silence! Examination In Progress�. A comical tune started up in my head and before I knew it it grew into a piano piece, which I wrote down and played daily to help myself cope with the stress of exams. When Gary asked for another Banda piece, I was excited to give this early little savior another chance at life as a piece for junior strings.
