This piece was written in memory of my father. So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements.

1. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.
2. A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
3. Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves.

Phyllis Avidan Louke (b. 1954), a flutist, teacher, and award-winning composer, living in Portland, Oregon, has been arranging and composing since 1990, with over 70 pieces published.  Many of her works have received recognition in the annual National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition and other composition competitions.  Ms. Louke has also been the recipient of annual ASCAP awards since 2004.  Her compositions and arrangements have been much-performed nationally and internationally and many have been recorded.  She is also the co-author of an award-winning series of pedagogical publications for the flute published by Theodore Presser Company.  Her music is published by Theodore Presser Company, ALRY Publications, Falls House Publications, Fabulous Flute Music Company, Nourse Wind Publications, and SMP Publications.

Reflections is a lush ballad for band which is suitable for concert or contest. Clarinets do not cross the break and the high note for trumpet is fourth line D. Reflections can be used by more mature bands as an excellent warm-up selection.

Reflections on a Haunted House, by Paul Burnell.  Composed 2021 for Piano.

Movements may be performed individually. 

'Reflections on a Haunted House' comprises sixty short pieces, thirty of which are for piano.

The piano movements may be performed as solo items, or alternately performed with pre-recorded backing tracks.

If all piano movements are performed as a solo set without backing the total duration is 29 minutes.

The titles of the piano movements are derived from the short story 'A Haunted House' by Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). The story was first published in the 1921 collection 'Monday or Tuesday' and later in the 1944 collection 'A Haunted House and Other Short Stories'.

The backing tracks are included on the album 'Reflections on a Haunted House' (IPBO11) released in 2021.

Reflections for Piano

The movements that make up Reflections for Piano represent my musical opinions on life.  From the sentimental melodies and added harmonies of the first movement, the dark, musky quartal, and quintal harmonies of the second movement, the ornamented, and atonal-inspired music of the third music, and the whimsical (best word I can come up with, which is also the title of the movement) feeling of the last movement, these pieces are really fun to play.  

These pieces are best for intermediate piano players.

Reflections is a meditative journey of a song. This composition is on Julie Hanney's Taking Flight EP that was released by Heart Dance Records in July of 2022. The way sunlight glints off of water is what inspired this piece - those silver and gold reflections that bring you to the present moment and instill wonder and gratitude. This piece also calms the listener into a state of remembrance, of reflecting. I hope you enjoy this piece and the whole EP which also includes Taking Flight, Coming Home and Slowing Down.

I Remember, for B-flat clarinet is the fourth instrumental love song from the Reflections Suite and feels like one is coming home. Gentle serene melodies with long legato lines and a few periodic bursts of florid technique.

Like thumbing through old photographs, I Remember is touching and reflective. The long, soaring melody of the clarinet and the steadfast rhythm of the piano present a nostalgic performance, remembering the glory of youth while yearning to know what the future will bring.

Reflections on a German Folk Song is based on the traditional round Himmel und Erde, which directly translated means
Heaven and Earth, however the common English title is Music Alone Shall Live. While teaching music for Saydel
Community School District in Des Moines, Iowa, I taught the round to elementary students and concluded that the folk tune
would lend itself well to young instrumentalists. Consequently, I set out to arrange the round for emerging band.
After an introduction based on motives and rhythms of the round, the tune is initially played by an alto saxophone solo (or
oboe). After a transition from the key of F Major to E-Flat Major, the band divides into three groups to play the three-voice
round. The entire round is repeated twice, exhibiting a lengthy crescendo and eventual diminuendo caused by the three
instrument groupings ending their voices in the round.
Having students perform a simple, yet lyrical round provides for a variety of educational opportunities. Similar to young
vocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different than
other sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section or
independent part. Reflections on a German Folksong contains simplistic rhythms, which allows students to primarily focus
on phrasing, articulation, tone quality and dynamics.

Wandering is the second instrumental love song from the Reflections Suite.  Like a waltz from yesteryear, this piece is a dream-like dance for Clarinet in A or B flat (both parts are included). 

The piano and clarinet are like a couple in love, wandering through life hand in hand. The clarinet's broad melodic lines embrace the piano's lush harmonies; together on a journey through whatever twists and turns life may bring.
