This piece was written in memory of my father. So many childhood memories of Dad revolved around water-summer vacations spent with my family camping by a mountain stream, fishing in a lake and outings to ocean beaches near my childhood home in Southern California. This programmatic work is in three movements.

  1. A Cool Mountain Stream utilizes the pentatonic scale to depict a stream as it meanders along, frequently bouncing over rocks and sometimes heading down a slope, eventually ending in a small waterfall that empties into a deep pool. During a summer vacation, my family camped by a stream that was a natural waterslide. We spent many happy hours sliding down the waterslide into the pool below.
  2. A Quiet Morning on the Lake uses the repetitive rocking motion of the piano to represent the soothing motion of the rowboat as I spent summer vacations fishing for trout with my dad on a quiet lake in the San Bernardino Mountains.
  3. Frolic in the Surf brings out the playfulness felt at the ocean beach, while getting used to the water temperature and trying to predict when the waves will hit the shore. Many summer days were spent on Southern California beaches with family and friends, body surfing, tanning and simply playing in the waves.

Phyllis Avidan Louke (b. 1954), a flutist, teacher, and award-winning composer, living in Portland, Oregon, has been arranging and composing since 1990, with over 70 pieces published.  Many of her works have received recognition in the annual National Flute Association Newly Published Music Competition and other composition competitions.  Ms. Louke has also been the recipient of annual ASCAP awards since 2004.  Her compositions and arrangements have been much-performed nationally and internationally and many have been recorded.  She is also the co-author of an award-winning series of pedagogical publications for the flute published by Theodore Presser Company.  Her music is published by Theodore Presser Company, ALRY Publications, Falls House Publications, Fabulous Flute Music Company, Nourse Wind Publications, and SMP Publications.

Reflections on a Haunted House, by Paul Burnell.  Composed 2021 for Piano.

Movements may be performed individually. 

'Reflections on a Haunted House' comprises sixty short pieces, thirty of which are for piano.

The piano movements may be performed as solo items, or alternately performed with pre-recorded backing tracks.

If all piano movements are performed as a solo set without backing the total duration is 29 minutes.

The titles of the piano movements are derived from the short story 'A Haunted House' by Virginia Woolf (1882-1941). The story was first published in the 1921 collection 'Monday or Tuesday' and later in the 1944 collection 'A Haunted House and Other Short Stories'.

The backing tracks are included on the album 'Reflections on a Haunted House' (IPBO11) released in 2021.

Daydream is the first instrumental love song from the Reflections Suite. This delicate piece allows the rare opportunity to showcase the sweet lyrical side of the E flat clarinet as a solo instrument. A version for B flat clarinet is also included.

The delicate shimmer of the piano chords set the wistful mood of a beautiful day: sitting under a tree, staring up at the clouds, freeing your mind to wander. The florid passages and fluid interplay between the piano and clarinet are carefree, youthful, joyous and optimistic.

Reflections of Home is an homage to the first works I composed: the music that initially compelled me to pursue my dream. While much of what I write today seems worlds apart from these original pieces, there are strong connections between all of my music, even when it is not readily apparent. Half of the music in this collection are revised and expanded versions of a few of my very first compositions. The other half of this album are pieces I composed in honor of these musical roots.

Reflections of Home is, in many ways, a literal title. It is impossible for me to compose, play, or hear this music without thinking of my youth, my childhood house, or my family’s piano. In fact, the music itself feels like a compositional home. These works are the origins of everything I create today, and no matter how far from these beginnings myself or my artistic interests travel, this music will always be my home.

Four Reflections (Perspectives on America) from American composer P. F. Strohm, is a combined setting of two other works, Dialogue and Trilogy in a single concert piece. This setting is scored for a 10-part brass ensemble, comprised of two brass quintets, one using tuba and one using bass trombone.Combining the two works makes the resulting work an ideal brass section concert showcase. Opening with a hard-hitting, four minute, straight-ahead jazz movement with trumpet solos, the work follows with a lovely chorale-like 3/2 movement that lasts another four minutes. Then comes a powerful three-and-a-half minute incantation, which bursts into a two-and-a-half minute dance in 7/4. The work is solid brass, rewarding for both performers and listeners. Four Reflections is both demanding and exciting, perfect for recital or concert. Level of difficulty is Medium-Advanced, and total performance time is 14:10. Member, ASCAP.

Contemporary Classic solo piano piece for Grade 3-4 intermediate players.

 

‘Reflections’, is a gently evolving ambient piece in the key of G major. It uses a repetitive eight note broken chord pattern, spread between the hands, based on the primary chord of the key. This develops into arpeggios in the left hand as the right plays the melody in two part harmony. Sonically rich four note chord voicings are utilised to introduce a contrasting theme in the relative minor.

 

 

Key Techniques:

 

• Broken chords patterns

• Four note chord voicings

• Left hand intervallic stretches of an octave plus.

 

Composer Tips:

 

• Play with a gentle touch throughout.

• Be sure to count the beats in the bars with the held semibreves.

• Keep the left arm light and loose when negotiating the octave plus intervals on page 4.
