Greenberg #115607. Published by Robert M. Greenberg (A0.987859). Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 35 minutes Year of composition: 1992 Program Note: I. A City By The Sea II. Hay Mowing III. When Grandma, May She Rest In Peace, Died IV. Longing V. Ancient Murderess Night VI. Lullaby VII. Toys VIII. Old Age IX. Rest IRON BALCONIES AND LILIES was written between December 1991 and November 1992. The nine poems of the cycle, originally in Yiddish and by various poets, speak of a woman's life at various stages, from extreme old age to youth, and back to old age. The poetry is magnificent and direct: at turns quiet, passionate, gentle, ferocious, erotic, agonized and violent. In setting these poems, I have particularly sought to capture the many images and metaphors that unite them. For example, the music representing the violent, life-giving blades (scythes) of No. 2 evoke agonized, ritualized grief in No. 3, a ghastly (and comic) celebration of death in No. 5, and ultimately, a wondrous and benign angel of death in No. 9. Over the course of the cycle, the power and singular clarity of childhood memory gives way to the quiet complexity and blurred edge of adult memory. All poems used by permission.

Large Ensemble Accordion,Clarinet,Drums,Piano,Tenor Saxophone,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba,Voice - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.734443 By Marlene Dietrich. By Norbert Schultze. Arranged by Dennis Ruello. Contemporary. Score and parts. 12 pages. Chicory Music #5734393. Published by Chicory Music (A0.734443). Lili Marlene Without any doubt the most popular song of the Second World War was 'Lili Marlene'. It was based on a poem written during the First World War by German soldier Hans Leip and was addressed to two of Leip’s girlfriends, Lili and Marlene. It was published in 1937 as 'The Song of the Young Sentry' and set to music the following year by Norbert Schultze. Recorded by cabaret artiste Lale Andersen on 2 August 1939, the song sold a mere 700 copies on release and faded into obscurity.

Guitar,Piano,Vocal,Voice - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1170438 By Marlene Dietrich. By Hans Leip, Norbert Schultze, and Tommie Connor. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. 20th Century,Historic,Multicultural,Patriotic,Traditional,World. Score. 5 pages. Scott S. Stewart #770808. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1170438). “Lilli Marlene†(Lili Marlene, Lily Marleen, et al) for some is a song of (political and social) contradictions, but it is first and foremost a love song – the tale of a young soldier in love with a girl while they are surrounded by the horrors of war.  Inspired by the poetry of German Hans Leip (1915), set to music by Norbert Schultze (1937) with a traditional folksong-like melody (to a typical war march-like accompaniment); the British Ministry of Information commissioned Tommie Conner (1944) to write a set of English lyrics to ‘encourage British war morale’ - for they were worried of the effect of German song’s popularity on British troops.  This arrangement is for solo voice and piano accompaniment.  It is in the style of a cabaret ballad – for after all it is a love song. Conner’s pronouns have been changed so the tale can be told from the perspective of Lilli Marlene.  Performance time: 3:15+-.
