The Symphonic Overture (for orchestra) has its roots in Julian Wagstaff's stage musical John Paul Jones, which premiered in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2001 and was revived professionally with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra in 2010. Essentially a tragedy of ambition, the musical tells the story of the son of a Scottish gardener who became a hero of the American Revolution as the father of the American navy.The work is in three clearly discernible sections: The first interlaces the Scots jig in 6/8 (which opens the musical) with the anthemic 'Freedom Arise' theme in 4/4 (which closes it), by means of metric modulation. The second, slower section is essentially a canon and variation on the 'Home Again' ballad from Act I of the show, while the third and final section is a radical development of the 'Battle of Flamborough Head' sequence from Act I of the musical. The full score of the popular Piano Quintet by Scottish composer Julian Wagstaff (www.julianwagstaff.com). This piece for piano and string quartet (two violins, viola and cello) was written in 2002, and premiered the following year in Edinburgh, Scotland.

The piece is eclectic, jagged and technically exhilarating. It exists on a frontier between the present and the past, and between notions of high and popular art. As such it draws on influences as diverse as Dimitri Shostakovich, Ludwig van Beethoven, Alfred Schnittke, Sergei Rachmaninov and British and American progressive rock.

The recording features the Edinburgh Quartet, with the Russian pianist Alina Kolonitskaya as soloist. The Piano Quintet appears on the 2007 Edinburgh Quartet album 'Frontiers and Bridges', produced by Calum Malcolm and available on the Circular Records label:

This string trio was commissioned by the music society of King's Buildings, the science campus Edinburgh University, in 2011. It was premiered by members of the Edinburgh Quartet in April of that year. The work is in three movements, each inspired by the work of a different researcher at the Centre for Science at Extreme Conditions in Edinburgh. The first movement is a musical journey through the high-pressure phases of the element sulphur, the second envisages a journey to Saturn's moon Titan, while the third is an expressionistic representation of the structure of the substance CL20, the most explosive substance known to man.
