This beautiful song, arranged here for solo piano, deserves to be much better known. It dates from 1900 and was performed at a British promenade concert at the Royal Albert Hall, London, in 1906. The song was republished in 1932 in the News-Chronicle Music for the Home, a collection of popular classical pieces edited by the composer. As a champion of musical performance, Landon Ronald intended this volume to encourage home music-making. The habit of listening to music instead of performing it...is so deeply to be deplored he wrote in the preface. It is up to all music-lovers to do what they can to prevent it from spreading... If this book assists to revive the desire of self-performance which is innate in most of us, then the aim and object of the 'News-Chronicle' and the Editor will have been achieved.                  .

DAVID in the meantime still conceals to himself the actions that precipitated URIAH’S death. NATHAN confronts DAVID about a rich man in the town who has stolen a lamb from a poor man. DAVID outraged at the injustice tells NATHAN that the man will die for his unfeeling actions. NATHAN then reveals that he (DAVID) is that man [There Were Two Men – Nathan and the Prophetess’]. Now at last the matter is exposed and David must face his actions. As NATHAN and the prophets leave, one of DAVID’S men comes in and tells him that his son has died. Other than the fact that Sousa’s “thunderer” was undoubtedly a Mason, his identity may never be revealed. “The Thunderer” march was dedicated to Columbia Commandery No. 2, Knights Templar, of Washington, D.C., and it was composed on the occasion of the Twenty-fourth Triennial Conclave of the Grand Encampment. The conclave was held in October 1889 and was sponsored by Columbia Commandery No. 2. Sousa had been “knighted” in that organization three years earlier.“The Thunderer” was Mrs. John Philip Sousa’s favorite march. This was revealed by their daughter Helen, who also surmised that the “thunderer” might have been her father’s salute to the London Times, which was known as “the thunderer.” It has since been determined that Sousa probably had no association with the newspaper at that time, however. The “thunderer” might have been one of the men in charge of making arrangements for the 1889 conclave–in particular, Myron M.
