(Minimal markings, no additional edits, i.e. no fingerings or bowing added)As per the tradition of the era, Bréval composed the Cello solo and the bass line, leaving the chord making up to the performer. This means that there is originally no piano accompaniment part by Bréval. (If you are familiar with any sonata by said composer, it is likley No. 1 in C major, as it appears in volume 4 of a popular method, which is supplied with a piano accompoaniment.) Even so, as many can attest, most sonatas of the Baroque/early Classical periods are beautiful performed with two cellos, or cello duet.In this edition, I have made the notation modern, the layout clean and clear, as well as providing the score of the two original parts and individual parts, labeled Cello 1 and Cello 2. (For those wishing for historical accuracy in part naming Cello 2 should more appropriately be labelled Basso.) I have elevated it to Cello 2 simply to encourage the performance of this excellent set of sonatas with two cellos. I believe they sound very good this way in spite of being traditionally expected to be performed with a chord making instrument like a keyboard in addition to the solo cello and bass instrument. It makes it all the more meditative by removing the striking qualities of the piano with the softer, more subdued qualities of the cellos.The solo cello remains the same as in the original work. Three cellos have been cast as the accompanying instruments, which creates a true chamber-like feel. Unlike my duet arrangements of Goltermann's Nocturne in D minor or Mendelssohn's Song Without Words -- also for sale in this online store -- this quartet, as it were, makes an honest attempt at reaching the sublime.

First, it is much more readily playable for cellists who are still learning the mid-range positions. Second, this key makes all the chordal accompanying in cello two that much more accessible more of the time. It is a lot of fun to play famous works with my students, who range from beginners to advanced. I have found that more students, more of the time, prefer some famous tunes. Transposing them into playable registers has proven to be a worthy undertaking.  The first page is all in the lower positions where many students who have attained the rudiments of cello playing will be able to play. The second page has been transposed up one octave.  It will be a pleasant compliment for the intermediate level students who have achieved a higher level of playing, which extends into the mid-to high positions.

Bach Cantata No. 156 Ich Steh mit einem Fuß im Grabe. Originally, Bach composed it in F major with the oboe being the solo instrument, accompanied by strings. In the early 20th century, it was arranged for cello and piano in G major. This is a beautiful arrangement but is much too difficult for many students who desire to play great music earlier in their journey of cello learning. There is a distinct lack of great music specifically arranged for cello students who are just getting their bearings in the lower positions (up to fourth). After playing this Arioso in C major, transposing directly from the printed G major cello arrangement, I made the decision right then and there to make my own arrangement for this wonderfully sublime piece of music. Transposing it down to C major takes away all the higher positions and reduces the number of accidentals that need to be attended to, thus giving the student a slight advantage in reading the music and eventually performing it, at a higher level of competence.  I have opted, in this version, to leave in all of the ornamentation and intricate rhythms found in the orignal.  This version has already been tested out on several of my own students who found it compelling and exciting to be able to participate in music making of the great music composed by the master of all Western Tonal music, Johann Sebestian Bach.

This makes it immediately more accessible to earlier-level players. The melody also features twice. First, it is presented quite low in register, entirely in the first position; Second, it is raised up one octave to where it is found in the fourth position and lower.The cue notes were written with the intent to be played. So, have at them if you so choose. If you are intermediate level all of the notes on the page are manageable.This is a cello only version.If you are still working out some technique, leave out the cue notes (and higher melody—the second verse. The melody could be played twice in either the low or high register depending on your level.) Later, come back for those notes and passages that are more difficult after achieving the requisite skills.In general, I think that Metallica’s songs lend well to the cello’s register. I hope this will be a good experience for all.

Also included are several Folk songs as well as the famous Ode To Joy by the great Beethoven.Sometimes a collection such as this are useful in that they focus the students attention on a particular set of skills. In this case, I have carefully chosen and arranged each study so as to build the skills from the open strings up to using all four fingers of the left hand. Students normally find mastering one or two fundamental skills at a time much more doable and more motivating. There are many methods available but few collections that are short, remain in the level of ability for beginners, and proceed in achievable steps. This volume was created after years of teaching and seeing how useful such an incrementally arranged set of studies can be for the student. Whether a student achieves the skill in question for a certain study in a day or a week, the usefulness of the exercise remains the same.

Just being able to play this as a cello ensemble already gives this arrangement some kudos.

Take a listen to the duet version excerpt by me, the arranger, and hear for yourself. It has a satisfying simplicity, yet coaxes warm sonority from only two cellos. I hope you will enjoy this duet. This arrangement is part of a larger project. Its aim is to reduce pieces written for cello and piano to cello duet. I have played many works with piano, which were great experiences, thinking how great they would sound as cello duets. Once you begin playing music as cello duets you will be enamored with the homogeneous and resonant sounds emanating from your two instruments (you and your friend, that is). My goal was to retain as much of the pianistic elements and interweaving lines as possible while arranging it to give it cellistic playableness. The pleasingness of the Lied Ohne Worte is so compelling that anyone of the same mind will find a way to play my Cello 2 part. Making an arrangement for Cello Duet was not part of my plan until I happened to desire a harmony to play along with. What I noticed was something that nearly arranged itself. I set to work immediately and several revisions later, I am pleased to say there is now a version of this amazing Song Without Words for two cellos. The little black dots sitting in the midst of 5 horizontal lines can blur together after a time. This method uses colors to help one quickly identify which string you should be playing on. Even if you are still not very quick to name the notes, learning to group the notes according to string can make that naming game a little simpler. In use are four colors. They represent the four strings on the cello: A, D, G, C. This method can be very informative. Rather than struggle week after week with the same slow results, try this color-coded strategy. There are three familiar tunes in this download. Mary Had a Little Lamb (this one tends to be straight forward enough that every student can play it in a matter of half a lesson), Ode to Joy (by: Beethoven), and Are You Sleeping?. They are organized with increasing amounts of string crossings. This creates the need to remember, more fluidly, which string any given note should be played on. The price is low to encourage you to give it a try. Think of it this way, if you were to get private lessons, it would likely take several lessons to get this information and you only have your memory. Now, you are only a click or so away to having the same information in a PDF that you can refer to again and again.

There is nothing added or taken away from the original text with the exception that I have a repeated 10 Easy Lessons in which the lessons are spaced farther apart. I have included a Preface and fashioned a Table of Contents, which is not in the original, that both come prior to the book proper.
