Götterdämmerung is the last in Richard Wagner's cycle of four epic music dramas titled Der Ring des Nibelungen. It received its premiere at the Bayreuth Festspielhaus on 17 August 1876, as part of the first complete performance of the whole work.It featured at the end of the 1981 John Boorman film 'Excalibur' when Sir Percival reluctantly throws 'Excalibur' to the Lady of the Lake and King Arthur dies.This arrangement is for brass band - and I have to say, it was rather difficult to make if fit and work properly! I hope you like the final outcome of my endeavours.

I wrote this as part of a Wedding Suite I composed back in 2005, and to be honest, I'd forgotten all about it and it's never been played, whereas the other two movements have been! One of the movements is now published as 'The Love That We Share' by Musikverlag-Frank. This is a big, bright fanfare suitable for any occasion - not too short, and definitely not too long! I've rewritten it here in 2022 and added some big percussion. It'd make a great opener for any concert, but would equally work for special occasions outdoors.

A very interesting yet quite sad tale goes with this song. An elderly gentleman got in touch and asked if I could write down a Christmas Carol he’d composed. I agreed, and had several visits with him when he sang the carol he’d composed. I wrote it all down, and produced this brass band version (and a vocal one) for him. He came to our band one night to hear what I’d done, and was visibly moved. Sadly, he passed away very soon after this, but at least his daughter Wendy had her carol. It’s a very traditional carol, yet with differences, and would add a new edge to any Christmas concert.

He was a very senior figure in the scouting movement, and dedicated his later life to the movement. The Mortimer Scout Hut where he was based has gone from a ramshakle old shed to a purpose-built building commensurate with his commitment. Pete was a World War 2 Royal Marine veteran having being involved with the D-Day landings – of which he rarely spoke, and was a well-known figure in his home village – often maintaining the church grounds. He was presented with an award by Her Majesty the Queen for his work with the scouting movement. He was also one of those presented with the ‘Legion D’Honeur’ medal when they were issued.

An ever so slightly 'tongue in cheek' humorous version of this work from Handel's 'Messiah'. It uses a quartet of soloists including Solo Cornet, Tenor Horn, Euphonium and EE Bass. The piece is suitable for Christmas concerts, and indeed the major work is normally performed at this festive time. The cymbals player stands with his cymbals at the ready throughout the whole piece but doesn't actually get to play them..! The trombones get a laugh too. The whole thing requires the band to 'act up' somewhat, and the score and parts have instructions on what to do and when...!

The work has several modulations and catchy rhythms between verses.

This a Latin Amercian-style piece written after inspiration from Gloria Estefan’s band the Miami Sound Machine – who are brilliant! It has some tricky rhythms which will sit nicely once bands get used to it, and there are solo passages for different sections of the band in a ‘fugue like’ section in the centre of the piece. I've completely reworked this piece here in 2022.

I think it’s a very effective work, but sadly the Musical Director of the choir for whom it was written thought ‘the parts were too high’ and it was never performed. She may have been right about the alto part, but it was the way she said it after I presented her with 40 copies for her choir. Guess what? I didn’t write another thing for them, and no, I’m not telling you which choir it was, but they are from Exmouth in Devon and they were formed in 1997.

Here’s an arrangement of Verdi’s ‘Brindisi’ from his opera La Traviata. It’s a great addition to any concert programme – and not too difficult either. Brindisi is a port city on the Adriatic Sea, in southern Italy’s Apulia region. The red-stone Aragonese Castle stands on a small island at the harbor’s entrance. The tall Monumento al Marinaio d’Italia, a rudder-shaped limestone memorial to sailors, has sea and city views. Across the harbour, the Swabian Castle of Brindisi dates from the 13th century.
