In The Shepherd Lad, the Spanish mystic Saint John of the Cross describes a shepherd lad’s (Jesus’s) love for a shepherdess (the Church) and how another (the Devil) tempted his love away. Heartbroken, the shepherd climbed a tree, “And threw wide his arms in sweetest charity, Since by His Shepherdess He was forsaken.� The original Spanish text was translated and adapted into Villanelle form by the composer in early December 2004. The text of Magdalene’s Song describes the feelings of a mystic, or a devotee of Jesus, inspired by the fresh beauty, grace and power of the Lord of creation. The main body of the text is given to a soprano solo. The text was written on April 27, 2008. These sacred songs were conceived as being performed either as a set or individually. The composer had secular ensembles in mind, such as college or concert choruses, but these songs may, of course, also be performed in a liturgical setting. The accompanying flute provides introductions, interludes and codas throughout the set and, on a few occasions, plays with the voices. The piano part is ad lib. (optional).

The story has been linked with old European myths of the Wild Hunt, in which a supernatural group of hunters passes the narrator in wild pursuit.Stan Jones stated that he had been told the story when he was 12 years old by an old Native American who resided north-east of the Douglas, Arizona border town, a few miles behind D Hill, north of Agua Prieta, Sonora. The Native Americans, possibly Apache, who lived within Cochise County, believed that when souls vacate their physical bodies, they reside as spirits in the sky, resembling ghost riders. He related this story to Wayne Hester, a boyhood friend (later owner of the Douglas Cable Company). As both boys were looking at the clouds, Stan shared what the old Native American had told him, looking in amazement as the cloudy shapes were identified as the ghost riders that years later, would be transposed into lyrics. The melody is based on the song When Johnny Comes Marching Home.

Probably the accomplishment for which he’s most remembered today is his composing of There’ll Be Some Changes Made, published in 1921. Billy Higgins, popular stage comedian, wrote the lyrics, and Ethel Waters, then just 24, recorded the song on the Black Swan label. The disc quickly achieved hit status, and the song has remained popular across multiple musical platform styles ever since.     This arrangement is a happy, fun piece and includes some of the great (and familiar) Vaudeville-style ornaments and phrases. It’s a real toe-tapper.     For the most part this arrangement is up-tempo, about 140 bpm. It does slow to 92 at the first iteration of the verse and again for the final ¬6 measures of the piece. Time signature is 4/4 except for measure 89, which is 6/4. The key is B-flat throughout, and the melody weaves among all instruments.     Trumpet 1 plays B5 (B-flat trumpet’s high C) briefly at measures 4 and 35 and for two measures at the very end of the piece. Tuba plays G3 briefly several times in measures 90-93. Other than that, there are no exceptionally out-of-normal-range notes. Trumpets 1 and 2 may wish to double-tongue at measure 64.     This arrangement was completed in 2019, and performance time runs about 3 minutes, 30 seconds.
