It is a challenging piece suited for advanced choirs in an academic or concert setting or for adventurous ensembles in sacred services. It mixes ancient and modern forms and sonorities to depict the contrition, repentance, absolution, and salvation portrayed in the psalm, juxtaposing medieval chant with Whitacre-esque clusters and dissonances. In structure, David's Kyrie roughly follows the Kyrie of the Christian mass and even borrows a melodic line from a medieval Kyrie. The heading for Psalm 51 states that it is For the director of music underscoring the fact that all 150 psalms in the Bible were meant to be sung, as they have been for most of the last 3,000 years. It is my hope that David's Kyrie will be an encouragement to continue that great heritage.

Joyce's Old Irish Folk Music and Songs (1909). It became a hymn tune when it was arranged by David Evans (PHH 285) and set to the Irish hymn Be Thou My Vision published in the Church Hymnary (1927). SLANE is named for a hill in County Meath, Ireland, where St. Patrick's lighting of an Easter fire–an act of defiance against the pagan king Loegaire (fifth century)–led to his unlimited freedom to preach the gospel in Ireland.This setting of SLANE takes a variations approach to the tune with three recognizable but distinct interpretations. The first is an intimate and contemplative interpretation, followed by a jig, which is fitting for the tune's Irish background, and the third is a majestic chorale. Sweetly Sang the Donkey is a sermon song from the Palm Sunday Sermon  2024 of Dr. Paul de Jong at First Presbyterian Church Fort Myers Florida.  The text is found in each of the four gospels, but on this day the sermon was from Mark 11:1-11 and the donkey was stressed.  In my mind, I thought of the children's song Sweetly Sings the Donkey and I extended it with bits of The Eentsy Weentsy Spider.  Of course it had to be in the key of Dmajor,  The bass provided consists of only two chords: Dmajor and Amajor7.  It tells the story of the procession on Palm Sunday and  like Balaam's donkey, the doneky carrying Jesus is given the gift of speaking. It contrasts the crowds that on Sunday wave Palms branches and  later in the week wave their fists demanding the crucifiction of Jesus.  It brings in the interesting note that Solomon, son of David, also rode a donkey.  This is a fun children's choir song with a very deep message.
