Choral Choir (SATB) - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.939650 Composed by Richard St. Clair. 20th Century,A Cappella,Contemporary. Octavo. 27 pages. Richard St. Clair #3000241. Published by Richard St. Clair (A0.939650). This work was awarded the George Arthur Knight Composition Prize in 1972 by Harvard University. The audio clip is the complete recording of the premiere performance at Harvard in May, 1974. St. Clair's music uses tone-painting to highlight Hopkins' ecstatic and visually compelling verse. Leonard Bernstein highlighted Hopkins' great poem as an example of vivid language in his Charles Eliot Norton Lectures of 1972 at Harvard University. The closing word of Hopkins' poem, yonder, provided the title for this composition.

Chamber Orchestra - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.869215 Composed by Thomas Oboe Lee. 20th Century,Contemporary,Sacred. Score and parts. 94 pages. Thomas Oboe Lee #2016287. Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869215). During the spring of the Millennial year 2000, music director John Finney and the Boston College University Chorale premiered my Mass for the Holy Year 2000 for chorus and orchestra in Trinity Chapel at Boston College. It was a large work, close to an hour long in duration. It was a momentous occasion and I was extremely pleased with the performance by John and the BC University Chorale. Ten years later in anticipation of the 150th Anniversary of the founding of Boston College, I decided that I wanted to write another choral work for the BC Chorale. This time the subject would be something directly connected to the Jesuit identity of Boston College. I chose for text the poems of Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J. (1844-1889). This Manley Hopkins project would come in two parts. Part One would be a private uttering of faith in God, and Part Two would be a public declamation of the same topic. The private utterance would be in a chamber setting. I decided on a song cycle setting for soprano and piano. The public declamation would be the choral work with orchestra for the Boston College University Chorale. 1. Part The First … THOU mastering me God! (2010) for soprano and piano The ten poems for this song cycle came from GMH's The Wreck of the Deutschland, Part the First. This 30-minute song cycle was premiered in Bapst Library on March 31, 2011. The performers were Megan Stapleton, soprano, and Diane Braun, piano. 2. God's Grandeur (2012) for SATB chorus and chamber orchestra. For this work I chose five poems by GMH. Pied Beauty God's Grandeur The Habit of Perfection Thou Art Indeed Just, Lord. Inversnaid Why did I choose GMH's work besides the fact that he was a Jesuit? I was very surprised and thrilled that his poems are so fanciful, imaginative and abstract in form and content for someone who lived in the 19th century. These abstract poetic qualities are the very things that a composer in the 20th and 21st centuries would find inspiring when they are seeking texts for musical settings. I did indeed find the sound and silences of GMH's words quite inspirational. Hearing music in those words came directly and quickly as I was working on the piece. I hope the audience will enjoy the work as much as I did when I was creating it.

Soprano and Organ - advanced - Digital Download SKU: S9.Q6222 Composed by Jean Guillou. This edition: performance score. Downloadable, Performance score. Op. 39. Duration 16 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q6222. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q6222). Gerard Manley Hopkins was reputed to be a poet of semantic ambiguity and, in the opinion of Guillou, therefore comes closest to the art of musical expression. Guillou has already 'translated' 'Peace' from Hopkins' oeuvre into a work for eight voices and organ. In 'Andromèda', the sound of the organ and the human voice are supposed to amalgamate such that in effect a new organ stop emerges. At the same time, the composer wants to have the musical organ work seen as an independent poem, like the lines of Hopkins, and wishes the language of the organ to become a kind of living speech to a certain extent.

Choral Choir,Choral (SATB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1365619 By Suze Pratten. By Suze Pratten. Arranged by Suze Pratten. A Cappella,Celtic,Folk,Irish. 4 pages. Suze Pratten #949954. Published by Suze Pratten (A0.1365619). This is an SATB setting of an excerpt from a Gerard Manley Hopkins poem called Inversnaid. I found the words fashioned in concrete on the wall of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh and was very taken by them. Apparently, Hopkins went on a daytrip to the small township of Inversnaid on the eastern bank of Loch Lomond in 1881 and he wrote the poem while there. The song is written in two sections which can be layered and arranged as desired. I have suggested an arrangement on the score but feel free to change this - my only caution is to make sure you include some 'light' and 'shade' in the arrangement...it is not meant to be sung with all parts blazing for the whole length of the song!! Enjoy  - and long live the wilderness yet!

High voice and piano - Medium - Digital Download SKU: MQ.9246-E Composed by Gwyneth W. Walker. All Saints/All Souls, Funeral. 36 pages. E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital #9246-E. Published by E. C. Schirmer Music Company - Digital (MQ.9246-E). English.A collection of four songs for high voice and piano. These Wing songs are inspired by the many characters of birds portrayed in poetry and folksongs. The “Tiny Swallow” is a mournful bird, weeping in sorrow, while the “Lone, Wild Bird” is a symbol of the Great Spirit called to earth. The turtle dove finds her peace in Heaven above, rejoicing “On Wings of Song.” And the falcon, so beautifully described in the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “The Windhover,” is a majestic bird, striding, riding and gliding in his ecstasy. The piano accompaniment is the expression of the bird, with fluttering wings and quiet, chirping calls. Often dwelling in the highest ranges of the keyboard (or, the aerie nest), the bird flies off at the end.Contents:1. Tiny Swallow2. The Lone, Wild Bird3. On Wings of Song4. The Windhover.

Published by William P. Gorton (A0.1071038). Prayer to the Motherworld, with text by Gerard Manley Hopkins, is a mystical supplication that invokes a divine essence that brings a sense of unity, peace, and security. Allusions to the world of nature tie the spiritual and natural worlds together in a lovely supplication. This haunting anthem, with a beautiful, arpeggiated accompaniment leading to a colorful climax would be appropriate for any good high school choir through more advanced choirs. Appropriate for either concert or church use. Can also be used as a solo.

Published by Thomas Oboe Lee (A0.869173). Program note: Two thousand ten marks my 20th year of teaching music at Boston College, a Jesuit institute of higher learning. To celebrate this milestone I decided to set a poem by the great British Jesuit poet, Gerard Manley Hopkins. In my search for a text I came upon his monumental work, The Wreck of the Deutschland. The poem is in two parts. Part The First deals with faith and God. Part The Second concerns the five Franciscan nuns who perished in the sinking of the ship. I decided to set Part The First only, for soprano and piano. There are ten stanzas. Each stanza has its own musical texture and mood. 1. THOU mastering me God! 2. I did say yes 3. The frown on his face 4. I am soft sift 5. I kiss my hand 6. Not out of his bliss 7. It dates from day 8. Is out with it! 9. Be adored among men 10.
