Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.990549). Canticle of the Sun is a declaration of love and gratitude to our beautiful planet, to its creator and all living beings that inhabit it. This piece comes from my first major, extended work, A Prayer for Mother Earth, that was premiered at the Carnegie Hall on May 28, 2016.  Canticle of the Sun is the most popular sacred poem of the Italian literature, written in 1224 by Francis of Assisi. It is a prayer, a hymn of thanksgiving and praise to God for the creation of the world.  Be praised, my Lord, through Sister Water;she is very useful, and humble, and precious, and pure.  In this movement (which is the 3rd of five) the orchestration is very delicate, the strings often playing pizzicato. The piano plays an important role, introducing the principal theme that is later taken up by the voices. I imagined myself as an eyewitness to this great flood, feeling the fear and terror of the people who knew that the water would arrive at any moment and would submerge the city. So, I tried to translate these emotions into music, and I really hope that you will be able to feel them too when the choir sings DILUVIUM..

Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1466460). Jesu, Rex Admirabilis was commissioned by the Golden Gate Men's Chorus of San Francisco, directed by Joseph Piazza. The original setting was for TTBB, two countertenors and two solo tenors. I did this setting for TTBB with some divisi. It is a piece of medium difficulty with some truly epic moments and others of pure ecstasy that can be performed with a large male choir but equally well with a small ensemble of eight members. The languages used in Jesu, Rex Admirabilis are Latin and English alternately; given its nature, is well suited to open a concert.

The world premiere with the Choir of Trinity College Cambridge, directed by Stephen Layton was radio broadcasted by the national Swiss Radio. The title of the composition is Agaunensis Cantus and is divided in two movements. The text is the first part of the Canticle of Zechariah - The first movement, Benedictus, can be put before if you want to have the whole text of the Canticle of Zechariah. It can also be performed as a single piece.

Published by Ivo Antognini (A0.1211209). In this Trinity Service (2021) I used the text of the Magnificat as if it were the storyboard of a film. I tried to describe in the utmost detail the emotion the words conveyed to me and the images they suggested. In this composition I have used word-painting, attempting to colour as many words, phrases and situations as possible; hence the score is full of expression markings such as ‘majestic’, ‘with vigour’, ‘lively’, ‘intense’, ‘with affection’ and ‘with verve’. The result is a piece that changes texture rather quickly, and its noble opening theme (‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’) returns only once in abbreviated form (‘He hath filled the hungry with good things’). The following Nunc dimittis has a much more meditative and intimate character with a sparser texture. There are some references to the themes presented in the Magnificat. A motif from the Magnificat, ‘Glory be to the Father, and to the Son’, recurs in almost the same form towards the close of the Nunc dimittis, but in a quieter vein and in 4 rather than the 43 of the Magnificat. The Magnificat and the Nunc dimittis may be performed individually.
