It is the eighth movie of the Star Trek franchise, and the second starring the cast of the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. Jerry Goldsmith scored First Contact, his third Star Trek feature. Instead of composing a menacing theme to underscore the Borg, Goldsmith wrote a pastoral theme linked to humanity's hopeful first contact. The theme uses a four-note motif used in Goldsmith's Star Trek V: The Final Frontier score, which is used in First Contact as a friendship theme and general thematic link. Star Trek: First Contact was released on November 22, 1996, and was the highest-grossing film on its opening weekend. Critical reception was mostly positive.
