Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 2 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.1257261

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Folk,Historic,Patriotic,Traditional. Octavo. 11 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #850592. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1257261).

Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries.

In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years.

Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song.

This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

Performances:
22 Oct 2022 at 2 PM Inversion Ensemble and flutist Adrienne Inglis (world premiere) at KMFA Classical 89.5.

Commissioned by Jonathan Riemer for Inversion Ensemble’s “Electric Choir” concert in October 2022, La loba (The Wolf) displays Alfonsina Storni’s powerful poetic voice as a feminist amidst the patriarchy of early twentieth century Buenos Aires. She breaks away from her expected role as a sheep in an obedient flock and becomes a wolf sharpening her teeth and honing her skills. Moreover, she calls for others to follow her to stand up and face the enemy. More than a century later, Storni’s voice still echoes with a powerful call to action in a world where women’s rights are as fragile as ever. Bored of its usual role as a bird, the flute breaks away from the flock to inhabitat the wolf through transformative electronic distortions. The main theme mimics actual wolf calls, surprisingly comfortable in the flute’s low register. The tango-infused choral harmonies evoke the dissonance and angst in women’s struggle for equality through the ages.

SKU: A0.750721

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Brendan Elliget. Folk. Score and parts. 68 pages. BJE Music #3521159. Published by BJE Music (A0.750721).

Waltzing Matilda is Australia’s most widely known folk song, and one that has been popularly suggested as a potential national anthem.

The song narrates the story of an itinerant worker (swagman) making a drink of tea at a bush camp (billy) and stealing a sheep (jumbuck) to eat. When the sheep’s owner (squatter) arrives with three police officers (troopers) to arrest the worker, he drowns himself in a small lake (billabong) and goes on to haunt the site.

The tune is most probably based on the traditional Scottish song Thou Bonnie Wood Of Craigielea.
The original lyrics were written in 1895 by the poet and nationalist Banjo Paterson, and it was first published as sheet music in 1903.

This is a straightforward but useful arrangement for concert band and SATB Choir. It can be used as an accompaniment to the singing of the traditional words with an extra chorus and the key change or played as an instrumental.

An optional Piano Part  (with Vocal Lead and Chords) and an SATB Choir part are included with the PDF.

If you want additional parts eg Horns in Eb or Trombones in TC, just email me. [Score updated 18-05-2018]

SKU: A0.1178814

By The Beatles. By John Lennon and Paul McCartney. Arranged by Suzy Lobaugh & the LABBS Music Category. 20th Century,A Cappella,Barbershop. Octavo. 6 pages. LABBS - Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers #778780. Published by LABBS - Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (A0.1178814).

This song is arranged in 4 part close harmony, tranposed for men's (or mixed) voicings, in the barbershop style (internal melody). The arrangement is based on one by Suzy Lobaugh (also available on SMP) and adapted with her kind permission, and in close collaboration with Suzy, by members of the LABBS Music Judging Category to more closely follow the original song's structure, lyric and rhythms. The sound clip is of the upper voiced version, for information.

The arrangement is suitable for most male or mixed / SATB barbershop choruses and quartets as a popular choice for audience-friendly performance repertoire. Each voicepart is within the standard barbershop ranges of most arrangements and each verse and chorus is a repeat of the same notes with no changes, aside from what is necessary to accommodate different lyric patterns. Note: if you are unfamiliar with the scoring of male barbershop music, be aware the treble clef should be sung an octave lower than written, as designated by the 8 below the clef.

This arrangement is not suitable for use in barbershop contests.

This song and arrangement would also be a great choice for other genres of male and mixed choirs and a cappella quartets or ensembles, including high school / college / secondary school choirs wanting to try the barbershop style. It is a classic song known to all generations, with a great message of support and friendship.
