Feet o' Jesus (From the cantata FEET OF JESUS by Judith Cloud (text by Langston Hughes)Feet of Jesus is a cantata for mixed chorus, soprano saxophone, soprano and baritone soloists and organ. It is made up of seven movements: 1) Feet of Jesus; 2) Prayer; 3) Shout; 4) Litany/Sinner; 5) Fire; 6) Angels Wings; 7) Spirituals. It is approximately eighteen minutes in length. It has been performed by church choirs, professional choirs and amateur choirs, as well as university choirs.I was very fortunate to have Anders Paulsson believe in the beauty and significance of Feet of Jesus. He promoted it in Sweden and returned to the United States to perform it in San Francisco. In May of 1997, the Saint Jacobs Chamber Choir under the direction of Gary Graden recorded Feet of Jesus, along with some other original works by Anders Paulsson and arrangements of spirituals. I requested that the soloists be African-Americans, Marymal Holmes and John Williams. The cross-cultural exchange was a vibrant one and proved to be enlightening. The very idea of what was truly considered spiritual in music was put to the question and answered admirably by Gary Graden and his marvelous Swedish choir. The BIS Northern Lights CD was released under the title Spirituals.

It is significant for being an innovative departure from the early English hymn style of only using paraphrased biblical texts, although the first two lines of the second verse do paraphrase St Paul at Galatians 6:14. The poetry of When I survey... may be seen as English literary baroque.[1] The hymn's fourth verse (His dying crimson...) is commonly omitted in printed versions, a practice that began with George Whitefield in 1757.[2]This arrangement is for SATB Choir and is performed at a Moderate tempo. It is broken up into 4 verses plus please watch verse 3. The Soprano melody has been slightly adjusted but still follows the same harmonic movement as in Vs. 1 and 2. When my friend, the composer and pianist Neil Crossland, asked me to write a work for him to perform, he requested that I give the piece a distinctly Scottish flavour. Perhaps as a consequence, hailing from Scotland as I do, the resulting work is distinctly autobiographical in nature. This is a challenging piece, aimed at advanced players. The four movements reflect the preoccupations of four stages of (my) life as seen in hindsight. The word dimensions in the piece's title refers to facets of my own character. The first movement, Complications, represents the self-image of the young. The music is adventurous and academic, full of the potential of a life yet to be lived and the earnest self obsession of youth. The second movement, Romance, is the search for love, though seen through the lens of memory and therefore touched with sadness. The third, Transience, shows the uncertainties of middle age, so full of frustration and of nostalgia. This movement contains my setting of the Jacobian poem Will Ye No Come Back Again?. The last movement, Revelry, blows away the uncertainties of the third movement with the driving energy of a Scottish reel. Perhaps increasing age brings a certain perspective; what does it matter if you have more past than future? Just get up and dance and let Dr. Music sweep your cares away. The piece features a musical fragment (first heard in bar 26 of the first movement) which has been the cause of much amusement between Neil Crossland and myself over the years. Neil has been composing music since his teens but the art has only much more recently become a big part of my life. However, musical ideas have always had a tendency to come into my head and, several years ago, I decided to play these two bars to Neil. Every so often, in the years that followed, he would teasingly ask me how my new piece was coming on, knowing full well that I'd have to admit that my magnum opus was still only two bars long! By setting the melodic fragment at the heart of this composition I have finally ensured that he can tease me about it no longer. More importantly, I hope that Neil enjoys our little in-joke.The audio file for this work is beautifully performed by the work's dedicatee, Neil Crossland.

Published by Colin Bayliss (A0.938389). This was written in the summer of 2000 for the Lochrian Ensemble who were beginning to plan the recording of the complete string quartets. In the context of the other string quartets, here there is a reversion to the classical form, thus giving a balance between the classical quartets nos. 1, 2 and 6 and the kaleidoscopic quartets nos. 3, 4 and 5. It is in the conventional four movements:- 1. Allegro - This movement is in single subject sonata form using one figure. There is much use of quasimodal writing, especially using the Lochrian and Superlochrian modes, based both on E and C and the Mixolydian mode on E, giving a sort of tonality in which the constructional remainder notes of the serial row can be used sparingly. The pull towards a tonality of F is therefore established quickly. Each section is rounded off by the metamorphosis of the figure into a sentimental tune, but contrary to expectation, it evolves in the coda into something completely different - the opening of Beethoven's F minor string quartet Op. 95. 2. Scherzo - Wobblefunk and Tango After the last movement's ending has dispelled any seriousness, the stage is set for an outrageous scherzo. After the tango, the wobblefunk section is repeated bar by bar in reverse. Why not? It doesn't make any sense the right way round! Historical note: the term wobblefunk was invented by the composer's son Edmund to describe a type of subdued electronic crossover style music which he had written. In keeping with the family sense of humour, the thought of incorporating such a movement into a serious string quartet appealed to both parties. 3. Adagio - This movement is tonal and melodic, but introduced by a discordant motif which re-appears as if to remind the listener of their own mortality. The movement progresses through the cycle of fifths and then dissolves into a sinister coda related to the notes of the discord. 4. Allegro - This movement can be summed up as accepting life's problems but getting on with enjoying the good things as well - in the spirit of the last movement of Beethoven's string quartet Op.135. Must it be? It must be! Even if it includes a textural fugue! The ending, however, is decidedly not as clear-cut as Beethoven's .......
