However, more so than any other compositional facet, melody is always a primary concern in these pieces.Many of the pieces in Notebook for Piano have been performed by intermediate level students and by college music majors. It is rhythmic, quite melodious and somewhat melancholy. Duo for Alto Sax and Piano is lovingly dedicated to Mary, my excellent music and artist wife.

The holograph does not bear any dedication, but it safe to assume that he wrote the two-movement work for faculty colleagues or students at the Art Center Music School. The score and parts are written at the pitch of the respective instruments, i.e., the two parts sound a whole tone part from each other. With this pitch relationship in mind, Heiden has indicated on the score that this work may also be performed by oboe and B-flat clarinet, two instruments which are also one whole tone apart. The Duo for English horn and Alto Saxophone is a skillfully-crafted piece that clearly shows the influence of Heiden' s teacher, Paul Hindemith. This influence is evident in the well thought-out counterpoint and the fact that Heiden would compose a work for such an unusual combination of instruments. Hindemith was a proponent of Gebrauchsmusik, or Music for Use, works meant to be used by amateur players for their own enjoyment.

ContrAlto was premiered by the Neubauer Brothers (David, contrabassoon; Paul, viola) on a chamber music concert as part of the OK Mostly Mozart Festival on 17 June 1998 in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.

Published by Imagine Music - Digital (IZ.MLM015). 9 x 12 in inches.Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 4 was written on 25 December 1944 as a Christmas present for his wife Sidney Robertson Cowell, a brilliant ethnomusicologist who had been instrumental in obtaining the composer's parole and eventual pardon. Cowell did not specify the instrumentation of the Hymn and Fuguing Tune No. 4, stating that it could be performed by any three woodwind or string instruments, or a combination thereof .. The only noticeable adaptation in this setting for two bassoons and contrabassoon is transposing the piece down one octave. While some may question the choice of instrumentation, I will point out that Cowell's final Hymn and Fuguing Tune is a duet scored for soprano saxophone and contrabass saxophone, written for his friend Sigurd Rascher and his daughter Karen Rascher. I feel confident that Cowell would enjoy this setting of his piece! ~Bruce Gbur.

Since then, it has been performed by a variety of string quartets and string orchestras throughout the country. The third movement was added some years later as a fun and energetic end to the suite. The melodies are tuneful and the technical demands are minimal making this a great piece of any string ensemble.

I decided to write about one of my own fears of growing up in the Midwest. Completed in the the Summer of 2018, this unique work for orchestra is about the terrifying F5 tornadoes that occasionally become a reality. Based on a repeated motive rather than a theme, the work transitions through the life cycle of the wind disaster. A longer contrasting theme, based on the feeling of desperation, is heard between the motive sections. Duration: About 2 minutes, 40 seconds. Performance Note:The 3rd Flute, 3rd Clarinet and 2nd Oboe are optional. The Percussion part may be performed by two players.
