Piano Solo - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1477723 Composed by Aaron Robinson. 20th Century,Classical. Score. 55 pages. Music at Immanuel #1055103. Published by Music at Immanuel (A0.1477723). Dedicated to pianist Eric Xi Xin Liang, PIANO SONATA by American composer Aaron Robinson is a programmatic work on a monumental scale. Composed in four movements representing four areas of Maine: Machigonne (Portland), Down East, Malaga Island and Katahdin, each paints a detailed portrait of a specific time and place in the State’s history. Its compositional structure draws heavily on the sights and sounds associated with each region while weaving original themes throughout. Mimesis is used to represent the native calls of the indigenous birds found within the state, such as the phoebe, bobolink and the pileated woodpecker; while hymns, songs and sea shanties are incorporated to represent various time periods. Movement I - MACHIGONNE - Native Americans originally named what is today the Portland peninsula of Maine “Machigonne”, which translates “Great Neck”. The movement quotes several sacred and ritual songs of the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine. The struggle between centuries of habitation by the native peoples of the area is represented by the arrival of early settlers and illustrated by juxtaposing hymn tunes and dance music of the past eras.Movement II - DOWN EAST - is the eastern coastal area of the state closely associated with the French territory of Acadia. Replete with historic sea shanties and tunes, the sound of tolling ship and buoy bells, lighthouse fog horns, and ocean winds are intertwined to create a high-spirited journey which culminates in the familiar Shaker tune from Alfred, Maine.Movement III - MALAGA ISLAND - Today an uninhabited reserve, Malaga Island was once the home to an interracial community dating from the 1860s to 1911, when its residents were forcibly evicted by the State. The opening theme represents the remnants of the island in its present state; haunted by the memories and unsettling muted solitude of the past and its historical injustice. A peaceful hymn depicting simpler times becomes slowly unraveled, erupting in a traumatic chaos that is never resolved. A ghostly refrain can be heard in the distance as the movement concludes.Movement IV - KATAHDIN - Mount Katahdin (“Catahdrin”), called “Great Mountain” by the Penobscot Native Americans, is located within the Northeast Piscataquis County, the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail. The grandeur of its majesty is portrayed by the original themes depicting epic rising and falling passages traversing over centuries. Native Americans believed the mountain to be the home of the storm god Pamola (a place to be avoided), which is characterized by ever-changing major and minor keys within the often times turbulent motifs. The sonata ends in a tonal key: bringing the atonality and discordant change of the work and its representation as a whole to a final resolve.PIANO SONATA lasts approximately 25 minutes.

Published by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) (A0.953628). Great for concerts about nature and the environment, pandemic life, creativity!Shelter in Place by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for mixed SSAATB chorus with nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnsona setting of Shelter in Place, a poem by Kim Stafford Commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021Founder, composer, and singer with Inversion Ensemble of Austin, Texas, Adrienne Inglis also serves as principal flute with the Central Texas Philharmonic, flute instructor at Southwestern University, and flutist with flute/harp duo Chaski. She has music degrees from Lewis and Clark College and the University of Texas at Austin. An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)Long before pandemic prisoned us,the trees knew how to guard their placewith roots and shade.Moss found how to hug a stone for life.Every stream knows how to move in place, stay home and yet flow outward, sending bounty far.Now is our time to practice-now to sing from balconies, now send words of comfortby any courier, now to hoard lonesome generosity-and then to shine in all directions like stars.Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. The nature soundtrack features sounds of the Oregon forest, stream, and night sky.Acknowledgements: The composer warmly thanks Katherine FitzGibbon, Bailey Dean, Chris Clark-Johnson, Kim Stafford, and the Lewis & Clark College Community Chorale. Contact the composer to obtain the audio file of the nature soundtrack.Copyright © 2021 Adrienne Inglis | adrienne.inglis.com

Woodwind Ensemble Bass Clarinet,Contra Alto Clarinet,E-Flat Clarinet - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1044859 By Zephyr Clarinet Choir Portland, Oregon. By John Gibson. Arranged by World Premier June 30, 2022 at International Clarinet Fest. Contemporary. 76 pages. JB Linear #649457. Published by JB Linear (A0.1044859). When I was given the composing project of a piece especially for the Zephyr Clarinet Choir of Portland, Oregon I wanted it to be specifically identifiable as a piece for that organization. After research I discovered that an ancient Greek and Roman god was named Zephros and I decided to compose around the god's various aspects. “Zephyros in my Garden” presents aspects of the Greek and Roman god, Zephyros. He was mostly the god of the gentle west wind, but he could also be not-so-gentle and a danger to sailors. He could be a horse, too! As a musician Zephyros was known to hang out with an ensemble of swans and sing cheeky songs. movements: 1. Aspects of Zephyros 2. Gentle West Wind Bringing Spring 3.Sailors Beware, Zephyros can be stormy 4. Sometimes Zephyros is a horse 5. Zephyros taking a walk in my garden 6. Zephyros and the swans sing a cheeky song As a composition for clarinets the piece uses a few “extended techniques”, some of which the players may not have done before: using ancient pentatonic scales, double tonguing for very fast sections, quarter tone trills, finger vibrato, fall offs and slides, and finally, playing in a cheeky or sassy manner! (John Gibson) The recording is of The Zephyr Clarinet Choir at the 2022 International Clarinet Fest, conducted by Barbara Heilmair. It is set for Eb clarinet, Bb clarinet 1-4, alto clarinet, bass clarinet, contrabass/contralto.

Published by Nicholas Yandell Music (A0.1343120). Premiered July 15, 2023 at the Cascadia Composers In Good Hands student piano concert at Portland State University, in Portland, Oregon, USA.Composed in 2023.Level: Intermediate level; great for a high school student recital, but could be a very managable piece for a college student as well. Composition notes: The first of a trio of pieces called Breathing Structures, this piece was written for and premiered/performed by Andrew Bren as part of the Cascadia Composers' In Good Hands program (where composers write custom works student performers). This is a expressive, post-minimalist influenced composition, with flexible tempos and dynamics.
