The Variations for Flute and Piano (1990) are a dynamic and virtuosic work consisting of an original theme, ten variations, and a coda.  In addition to traditional devices like contrapuntal imitation, inversion, and fragmentation, many of the variations hearken back to earlier periods in music history.  Variation III is suggestive of an aria from Baroque opera, Variation VIII spoofs twentieth-century avant-garde music, and the piano part in Variation X evokes Rachmaninoff.  The brilliant coda is a pyrotechnic tour de force for both players.

Lament for Flute and Piano (1991, rev. 2016) was inspired by the ideals of the Camerata in late sixteenth-century Florence and by the vibrant new musical style to which they gave rise, displayed in the earliest operas at the dawn of the Baroque period. The piece opens with a recitative by the flute, accompanied by continuo-like chords in the piano. A sorrowful aria-like melody follows, and later the flute and piano melodies are interwoven into an expressive duet.

The key centers follow a spiral sequence that collectively defines an octatonic set, and certain symmetries can be observed within the preludes as a whole. The duration of the entire set is about 35 minutes, but each of these preludes can also be played independently to good effect.

The idea of sonata-allegro structure, which in a classical sonata would apply to the first movement, is distributed across all three movements of this work: The first two movements serve as exposition, and their thematic materials are then developed and recapitulated in the third movement. In the coda all the themes are woven together in a magnificent contrapuntal tapestry. This sonata is designed to be performed as a whole, but the lyrical second movement is also effective when performed independently.
