I improvised this gentle piece first for the Communion of the memorial service of Lithuanian journalist Rokas Zilinskas on June 10, 2017 at Vilnius University St John's church .hen I came back home and started to transcribe it to the Sibelius notation software from this video. Although the tempo is rather slow, the process was painstakingly difficult. So I decided to improvise it fresh, this time straight to the Sibelius.What came out was a shorter version (ca. 5 minutes of duration) gentle piece suitable for Communion or recital. I dedicate it to Dr. Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra, organist, improviser, composer, pedagogue, mentor, friend.The soft strings remind me of Angels flapping their wings. The dialogue between two flutes is like two Seraphims talking to each other in thought. For me a miracle that stands alone portraying the all encompassing power of Jesus while demonstrating his unequivocal compassion. The MusicComposed in 1987 which beyond its inspiration from the miracle was clearly influenced by Debussy and Ravel. The opening bars depict Lazarus lost in some unknown realm; confused and alone. At measure 22 Jesus has arrived and will do what no one else can; bring life from death. At measure 49 Lazarus emerges from the tomb and Jesus moves on; ever closer to his own death and resurrection.The recording is a midi recording using the sibelius notation software. These five works were composed in 1965-66, when the composer was 16 and 17 years old, and scored in manuscript notation then, except Improvisation in Blues, which was improvised on the composer's piano at home and recorded on a 1964 Sony tape deck using 7-inch tape reels and the tape deck's own microphone. This tape recording, and the manuscript scores, were placed in storage for over fifty years, at which time the tape recording was found to have good enough quality to be converted to digital format. This digital recording and the manuscript scores were scored in Sibelius in 2020.
